Not open, and if I had to guess, won’t be open until July. The Emigrant Pass/Devastated Area trailhead is your best bet, and I’d say the climb is plenty doable in 3 hours, particularly if someone has already set a bootpack. The ski down and exit is fairly quick

Yeah, driving to the devastated area parking and climbing the north side is the standard approach until the road to the south is open, which probably won’t be for a while. The route is about 4 miles and 4k’. Recent reports were that there was snow almost to the parking lot so minimal bushwhacking. Even when there’s not snow it’s not too bad. With snow the approach is pretty obvious.
I might possibly be there too on Friday but I haven’t toured in a month and have shit fitness right now so it would take me more than three hours for sure. It’s a pretty rad ski, enjoy.

I'm usually up at Shasta by now, but the Coast Range is still going off.
One more trip to the Yolla Bolly's then planning to head to Shasta the second week of June.
How far up is the snow line at North Gate?

I've been skiing the Mendocino National Forest the past 25 years.
I put up a guide to skiing the Mendo. Nat'l Forest awhile back.

Changed my mind. Too warm for the Coast Range.
Skied Shasta on Tueday, June 4th. North Gate TH is open. Drifts in the woods just above the trailhead. Hiked up for about an hour to skin-able snow.
42° at the trailhead @3am.
42° at 10, 872' @ 10am.
Perfect corn when I dropped in and then a little firm on the lower section where the slope faced more to the west.

To answer your question a little more - Mendocino National Forest is the perfect place to ski in the winter. The snow pack experiences spring-like conditions every few days.
So the risk of avalanches is very low. I've never seen evidence of one in the 25 years I've skied there.
Perfectly smooth corn snow all winter.
Hull Mountain offers the most terrain closest to your vehicle. But there is good skiing at numerous peaks in the Forest.
If you drive up the 5 and look to your left (west) - those are the peaks. Still snow covered now.
South Yolla Bolly (Mt. Linn) is the tallest peak. It looked pretty buried in snow on my drive up to Shasta the past few days.
Perfect place for 'wheelin' and skiing!

Ha! That's how the Lemurians role.
I'll be up there on Monday/skiing Tuesday.
Bringing a friend, so not sure how quick we will be...
Should have recognized your van from your post earlier.
Those North Gate Chutes are a great run. Fun climbing!

Here is a Google Earth pic with my gps track from last Tuesday.
Followed the trail up (left track) and on up the moraine. Right track is my descent.
The North Gate Chutes can be seen from the trailhead - circled in red.
Searching 'North Gate Chutes' on my Flickr brings up these images from over the years.
