That is a lot of snow, mikey b!

Any thoughts on how late Shasta and Lassen will be good for this season? I'm aiming for a July 4th weekend and would love to ski to the car at Bunny Flat. Assuming nornal-ish weather, that seems reasonable, right?

Based on looking up weather data and loose following of conditions the last few years that seems likely but would love to hear the collectives thoughts. It'll be my 5th time at Shasta and I'm getting excited with this spring weather.

    Lassen / Shasta Conditions Anyone?

I’m sure 4th of July will be skiable on Shasta. It’s snowing as I type. Spent the last couple days at the ski park with my girlfriend. Hoping to tour a few days next week.

The highway up to Bunny Flat is still closed. The county has been struggling, but they’re working on getting it open.

Everitt Memorial Highway is still closed

    Hey Climberz!🧗♂️
We know many are chomping at the bit to get on snow plastered Mt Shasta. Unfortunately, the road to Bunny Flat is still closed. We don’t have an estimate of opening. Until then, depicted is the best route to access the mountain at this time, by foot (this is a non-motorized route).
    ❄️❄️
By the numbers: From McBride Springs to the Shasta Alpine Lodge (Horse Camp) is 3 miles and 3,000 vertical feet. In comparison, Bunny Flat to Horse Camp is 1.5 miles and 1,000 vertical feet. The difference is an extra 1.5 miles and 2,000 vertical feet.
This is the best option at this time. All other trailheads are buried with many miles of snow covered roads.
As always, we will keep you abreast of trailhead access/road info as spring evolves.

It feels like the season opener today. The EMH access has been closed most of the winter. There’s some monster berms on the Everett and at Bunny and about 16’ on the ground.

It’s been windy with poor freeze until last night it got cold and the wind dropped. It was mild today with a light nw breeze that kept everything above 11,500’ crunchy. Below was good to very good corn if you worked the right aspectClick image for larger version.

The pack below 12 looks great, there’s some settlement runnels that are annoying but will smooth out with incoming new snow Monday. The upper mountain looks comparatively dry and misery hill is rock currently. This hopefully will change with warmer spring storms and is due to all the low density pow getting blown off by the jet stream.
I’ve been messaging with Jack Kuenzie, the savage skimo dude who has been running and skiing peaks in his underwear. He did the summit round trip today in 2:30 and to witness was impressive. He skied the Red Banks headwall in skimo gear, it didn’t corn up on the upper mountain.

Any opinions on the weather. Thinking about heading up. Looks like window around Sunday maybe. Is there camping available around Bunny Flats? Checked Castle Crag and the reservation site was saying no availability.

Fun story: I was up on the road last year January ish, taking in the views etc. Young hippie chick pulls up said she was looking for a spring for water. Didn't seem to realize there was seven feet of snow on the ground. I directed her to the spring in the park in town.

When I rolled into the park I was immediately invited to a drum circle.

    Shasta. It's out there maaannn..

Here's a few now-obsolete pics from Shasta a week and a half ago (4/26). Just happened to be passing through then and it just happened to be a corn cycle. Yay. Tons of snow down low, huge snow banks in the parking lot, but oddly seemed like a lot of stuff up high (west face, Trinity chutes etc) were a lot thinner than I would have expected given the amount that fell this year. Looks like the upper mountain got hammered with wind. Did thumb rock chutes and they were about the best I've seen them. Good corn all the way back to the car. It was maybe 90% perfect corn, there was a weird texture to the snow that made it just bumpy enough in some spots that you couldn't really open it up. Hopefully this new snow will be good for that and plastering the upper mountain.

    View from the lake:

    Snow banks in the lot:

Weird stripped conditions high on Shastina:

    ... and West face:

    ... and Trinity chutes:

    Thumb rock chutes looking good:

Another look at the amount of snow down low. This is where you would normally pull off on a dirt road on the right to camp at Red Fir flat:

Just skied it. Great skin track from the parking lot to about the summit. Not corn crust on top of new snow. Skied great when softened up. 78 was a little narrow for conditions but great on way up. Some guy said he skied trinity chute today so I guess it is in

From legit pow to nicely transitioning spring corn. Some of the best skiing I’ve seen on Shasta this week. Buddy skied angel wings in winter pow and pretty much everything getting hit in pretty prime conditions.

PSA: Lassen road opened to Devastated area yesterday:
    https://www.nps.gov/lavo/planyourvis...ing-update.htm

I was at the south side on Tues and talked to a ranger about road status, at that time the road was plowed to Devastated area but not open to vehicles. The guy said they were waiting on the outhouses at the parking lot to melt out before let let a bunch of people back there, and there was a lot of snow at the lot so it might be a while, he was estimating a couple weeks. Guess it was more like a couple days!
