Thanks! Hoping the next few weeks bring some new snow and open up some more terrain. Lassen in the winter is a special place.

    fun day out there

    busy

I completely bonked out in the world today - had a skin drama that turned into ridiculous thrutching and then my energy level completely crashed - I was able to recognize it and ski back to the lot, but I haven’t had that happen in a long time and I don’t like it - not enough food and water I guess

If you were wondering if it’s an optimal time to ski the proper peak, the answer is, not really haha! Probably would’ve been helpful to have parked the shuttle car at loomis in daylight to check out what that side of the peak looks like at the moment.

Skied a more sheltered line above treeline on the way though, and that was quite good:

Until you topped out and got hit with insane northeast winds that I did not see in the forecast:

“So uh, where can we ski off this thing that has snow and is at least somewhat wind-sheltered?”

Not a lot of snow on the north side, but once we gingerly sidestepped through a chute covered by an old ice crust a slab had slid off of, then through a half-covered scree field, the skiing was actually pretty good.

North-facing trees down lower were unsurprisingly money. Too bad there’s not closer winter access to that side.

Fun adventure. probably would’ve skied the ample lower hanging fruit if I had known then what I know now, but I definitely don’t regret it.

The south lot seemed way more crowded this weekend. As we were leaving there was even a group (family?) complete with an awning, fire circle and guitar. It looked like something out of an REI catalog.

Any of you guys out there this last weekend see this fucker on that climber’s right ridge in the East Bowl, right of where the phallus used to be? Spooky to see that on such a sun exposed face, it must have been a cold early December up there.

Damn, that’s gnarly, thanks for that. I’m not sure how we didn’t spot a slide that big yesterday on the way up. Not planning to ski it, we didn’t give that bowl more than a few glances, but seems like it should have been pretty obvious.

We also were along the summer trail at 9500’ and didn’t spot their pit. I suppose they could’ve came after us but we weren’t terribly early to reach the summit.

Lassen sucks. The Peak is off limits for camping. (Think shits on Shasta... ahhhh, such pure stream water). Best skiing is in the NPS land surrounding, anyone hit Chaos Crags lately, ever? Switch take off of Crescent Moon? Halstead. There I said it. ! David Beck called it, and still is IMHE, snowiest spot in CA. Flowing Alpy ripped the one chair hill, took it out and sold to Midwest after low tide winters. '92-'93 year hit next. If you are old enough, well. and yes a dpps

Mt Shasta update; 8” cold smoke today over firm base with many obstacles.

In preparation of the upcoming AR event Siskiyou Co is closing Everett Highway and Castle Lake road by noon tomorrow, Tuesday January 26. Depending on storm totals, might be awhile before reopening
