PG&E does cloudseeding around those parts, as well. And, well, you can imagine what people think of that...

Why so quiet around these parts? Stopped by Shasta a few weeks ago, the coverage was insane. Snowbanks at BF are higher than I've ever seen. Did a quick tour with the dogs, and saw a guy parasailing down with skis. Pretty cool (though'd I'd want to figure out how to parasail UP and ski down!).

Anyone following this AR event that is apparently slamming Shasta as we speak? Here's a snip from the NOAA forecast at 11k. This doesn't include what was already supposed to happen yesterday which was a lot. That's multiple feet at that elevation by Tues. WTF? Freezing level supposed to be high, like 9k-ish, but still... Seems to be the norm for Shasta this season though!

Did folks hear about the huge 100-year avalanche that came down the apparently-appropriately-named Avalanche Gulch back in Feb? Truly impressive.

Then there's the one that covered the road below BF a few weeks ago:

That avi was posted about somewhere on this forum.

I’ve yet to see evidence that it was a 100-yr event based on my rudimentary understanding of how that recurrence cycle is measured and predicted. But it looked really big!

Probably posted elsewhere in this forum too but I didn't see it. I just thought it was odd that there's no mention of it in THE thread about Shasta snow conditions...

I was just repeating what Shasta Mountain Guides was saying about it, but what do they know. Either way it certainly does appear to have been huge. That would have been awesome to get footage of.

The very first "real" backcountry trip I did was a guided trip to Shasta back in like '98. It was late May, good season, lots of snow at BF. We camped on Casaval ridge, and one day climbing back to camp from the west side of the ridge we got to the top to see a huge sping (wet) slide making its way down the gulch. When we rode out after the trip we rode on some of the slide path and got to see just how huge the debris were and how much it would Suck to be caught in a slide like that. And that was just a tiny one compared to this one, thank god nobody was up there when it happened.

    Lassen / Shasta Conditions Anyone?

I’m 7 weeks post op for shoulder surgery (my labrum was completely detached from the shoulder socket, where the biceps tendon comes into it). Normal recovery is 6 months return to full activity. I’m hoping I can safely ski (i.e. be able to safely self arrest a fall at moderate slope angle) at 4.5 months with a brace, which would be mid-July ...

The good news is that the massive Avy Gulch slide from Feb will keep the ski exit from CG or AG properly filled and skiable almost all the way to the TH pretty late into the season, I would estimate you’ll be able to ski to the car through 4th of July and just a short walk through late July based on the slide debris having run so far past Sierra Horse Camp.

In 2011 that side of the mountain was skiable all the way to the BF bathroom through 4th of July weekend, and while it was much colder that season I don’t think we had multiple AR events and a mega slide deposition back then, like we’ve now had this season.

PS, if any of my Bay/NorCal friends wanna meet out there on a Friday, my wife has Friday’s off work so I can get away ...

Yes it is, went up Monday and got to climbing yesterday. Avalanche gulch was great. Really smooth surface made for an easy climb. Winds were cranking but stayed just mellow enough that I got up to the summit. No refreeze below 8500 Tuesday night made for sticky snow down low. Top of red banks down to +/- 9000 feet was amazing corn when I dropped at 2pm. Above red banks is a rimed/wind blown disaster. Survival skiing at its finest. Skiing the more south east side of misery hill (skiers left) was much nicer skiing than the main face. Saw a nice wet slide that released naturally into the gulch off of Casaval Ridge. And if you’re around the summit watch out because I walked over a wind loaded area mixed into the time that caved in and I dropped in up to my waist. She’s fat right now and loads of fun. Sorry for the lack of quality pictures. Video to come.
