It’s for the charge they put on carry-ons now.
Having a person check you in and a paper ticket means some is always “verifying” you aren’t getting a free $25 carry-on past them.

Except it's so easy to do that at the gate, why bother at the check in counter?

2-step verification and it’s easier to charge you at the counter vs the gate.

All this makes me so glad that I fly Delta pretty much exclusively.

App is really good, instant notifications where my bag is from check in to loading to what belt it’s on (in the event I do check one), ability to pick a seat on the app when you do one touch check in. Really quite painless and add in direct flights to everywhere and the Skymiles AmEX for me and that makes one loyal customer.

And they didnt actually charge me for my carry on. Good reminder why I am a loyal Delta customer.

Delta also has a "basic economy", though it's slightly better than United's. For you bourgeoisie who would never consider such things, Basic Economy isn't just the normal cheapest seats, it's a new (in the last couple of years) fare class that is even worse than the normal cheap seats. It's even cheaper, but they try to screw you and make it as miserable as possible at every turn. What you describe -- picking your seat on the app -- shows that you are not talking about Basic Economy, because you can't do that on Delta either.

And Delta doesn't have "direct flights to everywhere" if you're not flying out of Atlanta.

Alaska has this now, too. They call it "saver" class. I've used it a couple times without any major issues, but I figure anytime you don't have a seat assignment when you get to the gate you're playing with fire. Last time I used it I was flying back from Chicago and when I got to the gate there were probably at least a dozen names on the "awaiting seats" list ahead of me. I thought I was screwed, but sure enough I got on the flight no problem. Middle seat, of course, but that's to be expected.

Not to get too poliass but I just realized that after the government footed about 3 BILLION tax payer dollars to help GM develop and sell the Chevy Volt, they've now decided to scrap that car and bring us what now? A new and substantially LARGER Chevy Tahoe, a new Suburban, even more SUVs and crossovers, and are trying to get out of the sedan market all together for the most part.

    ...dicks.

I can't wait until the next oil price surge royally screws over and bankrupts GM and Ford. But this time without the government bailout that GM got last time. Screw them.

I recall being given seats with a saver fair if I’m not mistaken, but I probably am.

I took a flight to LA with my family (wife and two little girls) pretty recently. I thought I used the saver seats and managed to snag one full row and then the seat across the aisle. One girl next to window, me in middle, little girl on aisle and wife across aisle. Just before boarding my seat gets upgraded to FC. Naturally I ask the wife if she wants to head up there and I’ll take one for team. Wouldn’t want to relive the famous 2017 upgrade debacle. She declines and we all decide we want to travel together in our original seats.

So I sit in the middle seat and wait for the person who now has it to arrive to offer them first class. Some unkempt dude comes down the aisle, gives me a curt and annoyed “that’s my seat” to which I reply, “hey man, want to take my FC seat so I can sit with my family?” I’m not shitting you, the guy says “No.” Flat out.

In other words, he wants to sit in a middle seat in the back of the plane between two little girls. He wasn’t traveling with anyone else.

After asking the guy if he was serious, and him again saying he was, I explained to the FA that I would prefer to sit with my family and she told me that each passenger had the right to sit in their assigned seat, which makes conceptual sense, if they do choose. Of course it was AA that changed my seat without asking but I can see why they thought that was a solid move. I told her that if AA can require me to change my seat to FC, why can’t they likewise require this dude to change his seat to FC. I knew that argument was going nowhere and felt like I was taking disco biscuits having this stupid conversation.

I then asked the dude if he would take the aisle seat, my wife would go to FC and I would stay where I was. No dice. Holy shit.

I guess the guy just wanted to watch me squirm because right when I was seemingly out of options, he sighed and acquiesced, like I had just tortured him.

I flew basic economy on Delta (the cheapest) just this Sunday and 24 hours in advance I get a notification on my phone that it’s time to check in. I click on it, it opens the app and automatically checks me in at which time I hit the select seats button and lo and behold I had a window seat over the wing about 15 seconds after receiving the initial notification.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m a Delta AmEx member, skymiles member (no significant status), or if I’m just lucky, but I’m always able to select my seats when I check in on the app when flying basic economy.

ETA: Nope, I’m not special. Just checked and you can pick your seat in basic economy on the app any time after the app automatically checks you in upon opening it.

How about the people who board during an early boarding group and then seem put out when they have to get up to let you get to your seat? Airplane travel in general seems like a great opportunity for jerks to display their true colors.

Moving to first class and letting a stranger sit between two small children seems like a no brainer to me. But then back when my kid was 2 or so and SW handed out seats on a first come first serve basis we used to board last so I wouldn't have to sit with the kid. It did my heart good to watch him running up and down the aisles getting in the FAs' way.

    .
Truth, it can be a little harder when traveling with two or more people, but usually not. Most flights I've looked at lately the basic economy vs main cabin is pretty close in price. Then I can pick the preferred seats, exit rows/near the front, and have a chance at free upgrades, etc. I can't remember if it's my lowly silver status or Skymiles Amex that allows me to choose preferred seats at booking?

Well, then, fuck United in the ass with a rusty spoon, because they're making it exceedingly difficult to save a few bucks.

Yea comparing United and Delta is like comparing traveling camel versus Toyota. Even if you dont pick a seat on the app after checking in, they will automatically assign you a seat through the app.
