Probably should go in the things that amuse you thread but I'm here. My wife spent the entire morning the other day fixing the VHS. Successfully. We haven't watched a VHS tape or even a DVD in years but there was one old PBS show she wanted to copy to a DVD. And I actually wouldn't mind being able to watch the Ric Burns show about the Donner Party once in a while. First time we watched it the freeway closed for 5 days.

Can we possibly get any dumber as a people?
Illegal Tampering by Diesel Pickup Owners Is Worsening Pollution, E.P.A. Says
WASHINGTON — The owners and operators of more than half a million diesel pickup trucks have been illegally disabling their vehicles’ emissions control technology over the past decade, allowing excess emissions equivalent to 9 million extra trucks on the road, a new federal report has concluded.

Back when I used to live in the Kootenays, I new guys that would go across the line and buy a near new diesel that could be registered in BC (full emission controls still in place). They'd come home, register it, then head back across to a shop, usually in Idaho I think but maybe eastern WA as well, get the emissions stuff removed, then bring it back home. Even with the exchange at the time, this was cheaper than buying the truck in Canada. Not sure if this is still occurring.

when people use terms like “playful” and “funshape” to describe skis
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

Funshape is dumb.
I get playful, but to me that means maneuverable, can make a variety of turn shapes, and has some rebound. Which is likely more meaningful than "playful"

When people have pet words or terms that they’ve decided annoy them, even when they convey meaning and/or are used correctly.
focus.

For some reason when I hear "fun shape" I think of either some floppy shit like a soul 7 or this ridiculous contraption. The term should definitely be banned.
Penises are fun shaped, btw.

Replaced the back door of my house last week. Tenant is a friend, we're both relatively handy and he's done a few of these in the past. We were both hoping that it would go smoothly and the 110-year-old bungalow wouldn't have too many bad surprises to throw our way. We were quickly disappointed when we pulled the trim and spotted this monster:
Turns out the back portion of the house used to be a covered porch and it was enclosed sometime in the 60s. Concrete saw must not have been a thing back then, whoever did the job drilled 3/4" hole in the foundation and pounded away. The opening was somewhat challenging to work with...
That explains why the back of the house can't be kept warm in the winter at least. I think that insulating foam is for filling in small gaps, not pretending to be a wall."Your wife being mad is temporary, but pow turns do not get unmade" - mallwalker the wise
