Thermoplastics can degrade in high heat, yes... so don't wash them hot in the dishwasher. Just dry the bottle out and it'll be as clean as any other dish in the house and can be reused for a long time.

I'm not suggesting reusing shitty flimsy bottles... get a wide-mouth bottle that's easy to clean and forget stupid bottled water forever. Nalgene, etc. The stainless ones are sweet.
