Highway patrol wants people to use the zipper technique, end of argument. I'm not going to get rear-ended to be polite to people who can't figure out how a simple line works. I almost did last month, a guy in a trailer zipped by me at 70MPH: never again.
You know how TSA lines have two lines going to one agent? Doesn't everyone pick the shorter line of the two?

When you’ve been on your phone fucking around for 30 mins and realize that WiFi is turned off. That and data limits.

Simple truth is: Zipper merge is better for everyone.
And I can't help it if no-one else knows or believes this.
I don't blow by in the merging lane, but I'm still going to use it, and move up to the point of merging. I'm sorry if someone thinks it's a dick move.

Agreed.
Dangerous too as the solo entitled zippers usually end up stopped trying to shoulder their way in causing panic braking by fast moving traffic. See accidents caused by this on 90/405 intersections several times a week.
The zipper mindset also spreads to normal 4 way intersections with traffic waiting to make a turn and line jumpers zooming to front. These people should be crucified on the intersection stop lights.

By definition, I thought we were talking about traffic that is not "fast moving". If the traffic is fast moving, then there is no line and there is no zipping past them in the other lane; seems like merging into a line of fast moving traffic should be easy (unless drivers are dicks and try to keep people out of the lane). We're talking about where there is a long line of cars stopped or creeping or moving at a slow pace, with an open and legal lane adjacent to that line up, albeit a lane that ends in a short distance ahead.
On 93/6 in Golden, that line sometimes backs up past the previous traffic light, so there is an open lane of 1/4 to 1/2 mile and a line of cars that is just sitting there. It seems wrong to let things happen that way, and I suspect that there are very good traffic reasons not to let that happen, but I'm not sure, and I do wonder if, like The AD postulates, there is no efficiency gain overall by zipper merging."fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ

What I see on the mentioned 90/405 junctions is right hand lane of traffic backed up at walking pace in line to leave freeway.
Some precious delicate flower driving past line and attempting to merge at last minute. Ending up stopped with traffic behind him in lane 2 having to brake from freeway speeds.

Maybe people are just confused about when it is ok to drive past people waiting their turn?
I think it's probably best for it not to be encouraged since the opportunity to misuse it far exceeds the benefits.
And most people are just shitty drivers... Apart from all of us at tgr.

The guy showed up at 1:15. Did the furnace checkup. Left.
While I would have liked to tell him to fuck off and go with a different company, I have used these guys for a few years without complaint, and I am not so naive as to think that the other companies are any better. Plus, I already was at home, and didn't want to find some new company and take another day off (more accurately, work from home), on the hopes that they were better."fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ

This week, however, Washington state joined Minnesota in sending a clear message to drivers : merge rudely. It's actually faster and safer.
There's a name for it: late merging, though advocates prefer the term "zipper merging" because it doesn't have a negative connotation. According to Ken Johnson, a Minnesota State Work Zone, Pavement Marking, and Traffic Devices engineer, "We want people to merge at the point we're asking them to, so it's not 'late,' per se."
It works as follows: in the event of an impending lane closure, drivers should fill in both lanes in equal measure. Within a few car lengths of a lane ending, both lanes' cars should take turns filling in the open lane and resuming full speed.------https://www.google.com/amp/www.oregonlive.com/articles/13578642/another_victory_for_late-mergi.amp
Early mergers are niceholes. Whose than assholes.

It's pretty simple and people know when they are cutting others off and when they are zipper merging. I make the exchange from the West Seattle bridge to I-5 North every morning if I havent gone under the bridge, I wait in that single line like every other non-douchebag because if I cut in at the end I would be impeding a different lane that continues on straight. Zipper merging is most common at traffic revisions due to construction when it says things like "Merge in 1 mile" and everything is filtering to one lane . That "one mile" is a literal request from the DOT. That's where you merge if you are in the lane that is disappearing.
Speaking of rage inducing traffic issues in Seattle, the new exchange from I90 west to I-5 South is one of the stupidest moves I've seen. That backup is always long for the same reason the West Seattle Bridge merge is long - one lane, no zipper merge, you wait your turn. But with the new HOV lane ending after the point that traffic commonly backs ups to queue, non-HOV drivers are forced to cut off those who are waiting. And while they try to squeeze in at no fault of their own, the cars in what should be a free moving lane nearly decimate them and anything around them. I've got to get into the HOV lane as a single occupant in the tunnel just before the exchange so I can queue up and not have to either cut people off or have fast moving semi's heading to Edgar Martinez Way perforate my asshole.

Not sure that people do "know" most of the time
90 into downtown is my daily commute. Don't get me started about the HOV lane changes.
....Oh OK...the worst and most irritating is why they made the HOV on ramp opposite Uwajimaya bus only. what is the fucking point?

I wonder if the fool who rubber stamps these revisions has ever operated a motor vehicle in Seattle. I simply can't imagine making some of these exchanges and thinking, "yeah, this makes total fucking sense" while using them.
