By definition, I thought we were talking about traffic that is not "fast moving". If the traffic is fast moving, then there is no line and there is no zipping past them in the other lane; seems like merging into a line of fast moving traffic should be easy (unless drivers are dicks and try to keep people out of the lane). We're talking about where there is a long line of cars stopped or creeping or moving at a slow pace, with an open and legal lane adjacent to that line up, albeit a lane that ends in a short distance ahead.
On 93/6 in Golden, that line sometimes backs up past the previous traffic light, so there is an open lane of 1/4 to 1/2 mile and a line of cars that is just sitting there. It seems wrong to let things happen that way, and I suspect that there are very good traffic reasons not to let that happen, but I'm not sure, and I do wonder if, like The AD postulates, there is no efficiency gain overall by zipper merging.
