That might be an issue that the sheriff doesn't want to tangle with even if there is a ban. The drunks that are firing off mortars to celebrate their freedom also vote in elections.

It's also a resource issue, at least in places I've lived--there aren't enough cops around to even talk to each place shooting off fireworks on the Fourth, let alone cite people, and that's before you consider that a lot of people are drunk and drunk people also tend to need police resources for other types of calls.

My dog would probably be in favor of bringing in the National Guard with tasers, and I'd have a tough time arguing after last night. If it was noisy for up to twenty or thirty minutes (like the commercial shows up the road at the ski area), he'd get nervous and then find a quiet spot and be okay after a bit. With an explosion or two every ten or fifteen minutes for three-plus hours, his anxiety just kept going up.

I've got a call into the vet for meds now.

Yep. My folks are still on S1 and every now and then my dad asks about updating. He can’t with his old play:5 but even so I always say no. Thanks to the latest, I’ve lost the ability to play the several hundred CDs I ripped to a NAS. Fuckers.

3 hours? You got off easy. Here it started around 7 and didn't end until about midnight. It was constant or nearly so from ~8:30>11 with full on assault for an hour or so after 9.

Meanwhile a couple of people brought their dogs down to the lakeside to watch the fireworks and the dogs seemed fine with it. Our dogs have never been bothered. Is it the breed or individual dog?

The jerks playing loud 80's songs on relly tinny speakers while the fireworks were going off were annoying. We love to listen to the booms echoing off the hillsides.

Wakeboard boats going slow to make bigger wakes and destroying the shoreline annoy me. I guess they'll have to do something about it when the road starts to go--within a foot in some places. Our cockapoo doesn't seem to mind. We started her swimming this year at 2 y/o. She fetches a flip flop until we drag her back to the house. The waves batter her against the shore, she just keeps going back out.

I think it's somewhat breed and some part dog (maybe with some of how they were raised).

A woman I dated for a while had a GSP whose only objection to fireworks was that there were no birds falling from the sky as one would expect with that many booms.

My pomsky used to be more tolerant, but I think living in an older house now with crappy windows and no truly quiet spots, combined with being within earshot of a bunch of AirBNBs that often attract holiday revelry, pushed him over the edge. Or he's just older now and wants the damn kids off the grass.

All my previous dogs were terrified, but all rescues, and all seemed to have some prior issues.
Our new Golden is impervious. He was about 10 or 12 weeks old on his first July 4th. We live close to Snow King, so while watching the show, we basically fed him a kibble every few seconds as the booms went off.
It was a ‘perfect storm’ of opportunity for positive reinforcement, his age, etc.
    Now he’s a rock star.

Car in for routine 20k service at the dealership.
Dealer call me: “Hey, our service guy is recommending you do a 4 wheel alignment”.
Me “oh man, how bad is it? Is there bad uneven tire wear?”
Reply: “no, your tires look good. They just think it s probably a good time to do it”
    Me: “yea, no”

Our cockapoo, used to not give any fuks about the fireworks but he is 12 now and for the last couple of years has become really freaked out by them. Not sure why the change as his living situation is the same. Last night I could not even get him to stay outside long enough to pee so he just held it all night. He was either wedged into us or under the bed the rest of the nite. Maybe the hearing has changed w age?

As a cockapoo, he hates swimming and the water. Which is kind of fine because he’s a pita to dry off and clean up when he does get wet

Our border collie couldn’t have been bothered less by the boom booms last night. Hope she maintains that non chalance

Our husky mix used to not give a shit about fireworks but now gets all anxious. Our Aussie mix used to shit herself in fear and now only trembles in the corner when it gets loud and repeated.

These old dogs, they do change I guess.

    Also fuck fireworks.

Complaining about your dog's reaction to fireworks is akin to bitching about your kids hearing rap music. Take a lap.

My new rescue mutt doesn't seem to give a shit and the golden retard sure as shit doesn't care. However with the golden I took him out early(like 10 weeks) and shot a .22, a shotgun, and a 44 mag while my wife held him and gave treats. The rez mutt has been around chainsaws and a couple big thunderstorms and hasn't seemed to mind much but i got him early too(5 weeks). Coincidentally I got him neutered recently so I had the vet give me sedatives but more so because he is high energy.

I still enjoy a good fireworks show but it annoyed me that some retards on the hill above us consistently couldn't figure out their mortars and lit the hill on fire multiple times. At least they got it put out and the fire station is like half a block from me.

FedEx sucks. Package was lost for a couple days, now in Vegas. Or will be...in 6 hours?

Edit - text doesn't show up well. But screen says "Arrived at Fedex location 4am, July 6 2024". Cool, except it's only 11:30pm on July 5. So they can see into the future, but still have trouble figuring out where the package is.

I have an extra S1 Connect:Amp (2 channel) if anyone needs such a thing. Would sell for reasonable price.

It's annoying when the guy driving the garbage truck leaves the can laying on its side 4 feet into the street. It's even worse when cars can't get past it because the neighbor across the street is parked in the street. They sat and leaned into the horn until I woke up to go move it. Not too big a deal but it's fucking pouring, 1.5" in 30 minutes is no joke! But yeah, just get up and go out in slippers and move the fukn thing because the driver's an asshole and this keeps happening.

^ Seems like both drivers were assholes - the garbage truck and the honker.

Sounds like a New Yorker. The other day at the transfer station a woman with New York plates lays on the horn because contractors were backing up with a trailer to dump shingles. Clearly you are on vacation and these folks are working. Take a chill pill. And oh two bags of garbage and no recycling, thank you very much.

Can you walk us through the logic behind your comparison? Or do you live in a world where everyone has a soundproof bunker they can put their dogs in overnight? I don’t know about you, but my 4th of July fireworks experiences have always fallen in Summer, which means windows are open at night to cool off the house.

Speaking of trash and recycling, our local transfer station has two compactors, one for trash and one for recycling. First annoyance: the nagging feeling that compacted single-stream recycling must be harder to sort. Second annoyance: when the compactors are full, they put "compactor full--use dumpster around corner" signs on but don't have separate trash and recycling dumpsters.
