Damned sharp-shinned hawk showed up at a bird feeder yesterday. The sharpie is a songbird specialist that has to kill and eat a couple little birds every day to survive. He's a lethal bastard and he looks it.

Some of those Steller's jays and magpies and chickadees are my friends. We'll set glass pie plates on the floor, and the jaybirds will come inside off the deck and eat breakfast with us like sleepy kids when it's light enough in the mornings...

Gonna have to have a talk with my ravens. Been feeding Hugin & Munin leftover pizza and meatloaf and ham sandwiches for years on 2 conditions: they don't poop on my damn deck, and they keep the hawks away from the feeders.

Holy shit, that's annoying when all three questions are best viewed together for context and answered together or in sequence, with conditionals on the previous answer. That's going to drag out an exchange by many hours or days. Of course, seems like net is same. Just annoying either way.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone could befriend a Stellar jay. The ones around here chase off all the other birds we like--goldfinches, pine siskins, mountain chickadees mostly, and they make an ungodly noise. But to each his own I guess.

Right now we're annoyed with the pigeons roosting on our roof beam. The spot they're roosting is 30 feet up, can't reach it with our ladder to put spikes up and we shouldn't be climbing ladders at our age anyway. Gonna have to hire someone to do it one of these days. I kind of like them--just a pair, they seem devoted to each other and coo gently back and forth, but they shit in front of our front door. If I could just get them to go around back I'd be happy to have them around. In the meantime I'm getting pretty good at hitting them with snowballs, which drives them away for a day or two.

Damn, I put my heart and soul into a post explaining in detail why Portland blows, and all those moments are now lost in time, like tears in the rain.

I'm still in Portland, but Spokane is one of the cities on my shortlist. If I could, I'd be in Sandpoint - I've ridden Schweitzer a fair amount and like it - but I don't think I'd be able to find work there. Spokane reminds me of Portland in about 2005, which is great. I know it's growing fast though - I'm sure if I ever get out there, everyone will tell me I missed the heyday

-often won't respond to emails period
-when a response is received it often doesn't answer the question asked
-won't take the time to understand issues that have any level of complexity, which goes back to the above
