    Selkirk Backcountry Lodge - Revelstoke

Selkirk Lodge is one of the first backcountry lodges in the Selkirks. Built in the 1980′s by Steve Devine who died in an avalanche shortly after the lodge was built. His partner Grania Devine continued their dream with her sister Reinet and daughter Kate who carry on the tradition. Kudo’s to these Selkirk women to persist with their dream despite the odds! The lodge sits at 2210m near the Albert Glacier. It is only accessible by Helicopter.

Check out more pics and info here!

    Helicopters are cool

The Albert Glacier, we didn't see it much this week.

25,000 - ah that's spread over 12 people - too bad there's no self guided option but the terrain is cherry (what we could see anyway and I'd be pining to go for a long time)

Snow quality was acceptable although not as good as Colorado which, as everyone knows, is the very bestest

just spent last two weeks in the Selkirks. Was impressed with the snow and terrain. Can not see spending $25000 to rent the hut also guide thing is a big turnoff. So is there any reason someone cannot hire one of those catering services in Golden to make all your meals. Charter a heli and land in the drainage east of Charity and Hope peak and hang out for awhile? Maybe it's in Glacier park perhaps a heli operator uses it?
Also saw OR vehicle at Asulkan parking was that you?

Basically I'm unguideable so agree. If you've never been there better yet is to hump gear into Asulkan and hang out there. Or you can hire Kelly (her contact info is in the TR to make up packaged meals) and you can cook for yourself. There's lot of huts where you can go unguided and you can latch on to any manner of trips. Or like you've figured you can get a drop and set up base camp somewhere with an expedition tent

We just spent 4 days at Asulkan. I enjoyed the skiing we actually arrived to an untracked glacier. However the highway scene was a littlle hard to handle. Just trying to figure things out for next trip.

Great Cairn Hut is nice and not used; heli-access. Sled accessed huts in Jumbo, Int'l Basin. Rent some space at the Lyell or Mons huts. good start if you like exploring

In our experience the guide doesn't matter as much as the group.

If you are there with your own group, the guide will cater to you. If you join a group, and you're not sure of their fitness or experience, then you can be limited by the weaker members of the group.

If conditions allow, and there is more then one guide then the group can split up.

At Battle Abbey we had three guides, we started out together but by the end of the day were pretty much split up based on fitness and experience.

Remember too, that this price is for 12 people, includes food, bedding and transportation.

We've often gone unguided which works for us cause we can read a map... We like the catered option since you still have to pay for the food, the extra cost of the cook makes up for the time you don't have to spend planning, transporting and preparing food for a week.

Some of the places require guides since they are glaciated and complex and the tenure owners probably don't want to have to deal with peoples poor choices if they are unfamiliar with the area.

Having a guide in an area you are unfamiliar with can ensure you do get the best experience. Or if you have a less experienced person they too can feel comfortable in terrain they may not be comfortable with.

The key though is, having a guide that knows what you want, and having extra guides to take care of people who want a more mellow day.
