When I first heard Pharoah Sanders, I thought “Oh, he is copying Coltrane” with the occasional emotional screeching. But as it turns out, it was the other way round. It was Coltrane that was influenced by Sanders. Coltrane adopted that style after having Sanders join his group.

I love rap and of course it's music and I saw Pharoah at the Birdland Jazz Club in NYC about 4? years ago and like him too. Also not sure if you are right on who influenced who here - but I'm no jazz scholar.

I’m not a jazz historian, either, by any stretch. When I looked into it years ago, I couldn’t find any recordings by Coltrane “overblowing” until Sanders joined his group. On the other hand, I can’t say for certain that Sanders was the source of that, although I believe I read Coltrane acknowledged that Sanders influenced his work.

So maybe I overstated it, but always willing to have someone correct my BS as needed.

I guess I would submit that Trane was already headed in the experimental/atonal/overblow/multimodal direction before he started playing with Sanders.

I’ve also read a lot of comments about Sanders influencing Coltrane. No doubt he did. There was an explosion of creativity during that period. Some say LSD was involved…

Likely they were both influenced by Ornette Coleman?

I never got his music, but he definitely had an impact.

A quick aside re: gangsta lean. My dad was a motorhead, in particular a Lincoln lover. Owned them from 1947 on…
At one point he had a ‘71 Mark III in root beer brown. Put shiny chrome mags on it.

Dad, my brother and I were in the car stopped at a light one day, in an area of PDX with a higher than average percentage of POC.

Black guy in a root beer brown ‘71 Mark III, with shiny mags, pulled up next to us. Guy had one of those broad brimmed pimp hats and a fur coat.

He looked over at us and tipped his hat.

Did I mention my dad was a racist? More like broadly bigoted, but still.

My brother and I had a great time with that, for about a month. Kept ‘gangsta lean’ on a tape and would leave it in the deck so it started playing whenever he started the car. Even bought him a pimp hat.

Then a Mark IV showed up in the driveway. No mags.
