    Build me a table.

Too many pages in the other thread to see who can do what, who wants to build a cool slabby kitchen/dining table for a small cottage?

    Got any pics?

edit: Is this clear? I'm trying to commission a piece of art here.

He's trying to commission a piece of art from you, Z.
It'll have to be more than just a table.

I wonder if on woodworking forums, they have a thread titled "Make your own fucking tables" or something to that effect?

    good luck in your search!

Ice, where are you at? My brother does fine woodworking for a living in NH. Right now he's rebuilding a 1930 Christ Craft boat, but usually does custom tables, chairs and Kitchens. Anyway, he could do whatever you'd need and I'm sure you'd be stoked.

These were the only pics I could dig up right now. The lower one is just a coffee table.

Maybe check out the type of wood and grain you want to use. My buddy just started showing me exotic woods and styles before he passed away. There's a big world out there I had no idea about. I think once you have the wood chosen, it might guide the piece of furniture.

how many do you want to seat?
are you OK if it's not extendable?
will it ever need to be outdoors?
are you more of a de la espada guy? or thomasville guy? or modern shabby chic guy? or what?
    what woods do you like?
do you mind if it's got steel in it?
    and
    do you need matching chairs?

Kied, That table top reminded of when I went to see George Nakashima's shop in New Hope PA. Lots of amazing stuff that I couldn't afford.

Ha, sounds about right. George's stuff was unreal. My brother's work is along the same lines... uses lots of birdseye maple, studied under James Krenov for years, became close friends with him and now gets top dollar for everything he does. The good part is he is always looking for more work and can custom make anything for any budget.

Or ice could just wear the table around his neck when he goes out. THAT would make a statement. Movado, eat your fucking heart out!

Z dash is the clear choice here, but if he can't get to it my cousin in Seattle does amazing work:

this is the only slabby thing I posted in the other thread... many, many, thanks for the comment frozen...I appreciate that..

is this the kind of slabbyness you're talking about? or is live edge too much?...

.. don't have a table to show (yet) but this wood was going into a fire...saved it, re-sawed it and served it's purpose...the purpose providing head room for the fkn cats

I can see a slabby table with the legs of the flat file..or not..
but that's my meager submission.. you know MA has some pretty good woodworkers up there...and some slabby wood... I'd be all over this though if the timing were right...you know where I am..yur favorite state :-)

No the edge is good. I'd like to go with a visualy lighter base, something a bit more slim and (dare I say?) elegant in conjunction with a top like that though. I responded to a PM earlier, this is basically what I said: It's interesting that George Nakashima was brought up by somebody, because I had him in mind, style-wise. I like the combination of rustic and refined that he does sometimes and emphasizing the beauty of the wood in the top and bringing Japanese/Craftsman/Shaker influence to the bottom would be cool. Shaker above all, but they all kinda work together, so...

The place where the table will live is on the coast in Mass., an area with a long (and still very active) history of farming and fishing. Lots of cool old structures and ancient falling-down barns and old wrecked boats and shit around and I'd like to source the wood locally if possible (not a dealbreaker, it's just an idea). They built ships in this town (including some whaling ships and smaller Clippers) for 300 years, so bringing in the maritime influence would be cool. Not sure how to do that, just throwing it out there.

Nakashima tables (I like the Conoid, Bryfogel and Trestle tables more than the others): http://www.nakashimawoodworker.com/furniture/3/22

The table would be to seat 8 folks, so 7ish feet? 8, maybe?

edit: I forgot to mention the Shakers and the shipbuilders.

We met his daughter at the shop. Nice lady. The wood chairs were amazingly comfortable and unpadded.
