Thread: rolex watches...really?

The first rule is to go with what you like. I have Omega, Breitling and Rolex, and only bought what I lusted after. The only watches with serious resale value are Rolex, Audemars and Patek, so unless you come up with some strange unicorn (MAYBE a 007 Omega), it's all for your personal pleasure.
I have the Omega 300M with non-wave dial that I lusted after for a while: , with its boibrant blue, but as always, YMMV.
I really wanted a Tudor Pelagos, but when I tried it on it was waaaaay too thick for a non-chrono. They've come out with a thinner one since, but, as usual, prices are high with the new model.
The other issue is the fit - how do they work for your wrist? Do you want rubber, leather or metal band. SS or two tone, +++
Both Omega and Tudor (and Breitling and many others) make great watches in the mid price catagory. I would stay away from Tag as they are substandard, and after a couple of years look like crap.

I wish I could stand wearing things on my wrist*. I like those Mission to Uranus watches. Neptune is probably the coolest color.
*I just lost a 2 week old FitBit Inspire (3?) that was clipped inside my pocket in the clip they sell for that purpose. Fuck. And here I was afraid I'd send it through the washer.

Neptune is the most expensive on resale. It was withdrawn by Swatch due to color bleed and so the supply is restricted. It's a nice color for the wife.

I like how the entire series looks. Just pulled the trigger on the Mercury one... first watch I will have owned (as an adult) without a stainless steel band. Nice to have some variety.

I don't trust Uranus.

Hey watch folk. I'm looking at buying a watch for my brothers 40th birthday. Thinking of something nice, but not crazy expensive. Maybe something in the $300-$500 range. Just realized its cyber monday and thinking I could order a few to take advantage of the deals and return the ones I didn't like. Currently texting him right now to get a better feel for what he'd like. Any recs on brands, etc.? I'm pretty clueless on watches

Seiko has options in that range too. I have my dad’s Citizen Eco Drive that he bought in the 80s. Give it a little light once in awhile and it still keeps great time. Don’t think you could go wrong there either.

rolex watches...really?
That’s a tough price range. You aren’t getting a ton more for your money than a fashion watch and you really only see an appreciable difference in quality until you hit the 1.5k to 2k range IMO.
The best bang for your buck in that range is a Hamilton. Great watches for the money.

I noticed that Nordstrom Rack had some watches on deep discount. Mostly all show, no go, designer name stuff though.

That's a hilariously good look at the bullshit of the watch industry.

Yeah, that's what I consider costume jewelry.
IMHO the only fashion house that makes a good watch has been Hermes.
PeachesNCream: As Art mentioned, that's a tough pricepoint. Any way you are in a place near a TAG outlet (or can call one to see what they have in stock)? Some killer deals can be had on $1,500-$3,500 watches in those shops that may be closer to your target budget.
Also, as usual, Hodinkee has some ideas: Our favorite watches under $1,000
That Seiko Alpinist is pretty sharp, automatic, and comes in some great finishes.

The jewel encrusting of timepieces started after the Protestant reformations when modesty laws were put in place in Switzerland. Basically a watch, wedding ring, and some other bling - cuff links maybe were all you were allowed to wear so jewelers started loading up watches with diamonds and gem stones.
I’ve been eyeing an Air King for awhile, but it would take a lot of things to go right financially before I will pull the trigger.
I’ve had a Tag since high school graduation 30 years ago that’s still going strong, but it’s a real robust model, SS with a SS band.
I think in that 300 to 500 range that Tissot is a good buy.
