No I don't. I don't use my phone for any of those things, or any of the things I mentioned in my post. I don't even kayak. I was pointing out the flaw in bite me's argument which was that expensive Rolex watches had more functionality or practicality than a regularly priced watch or phone.

Unlike you Viva, many won't admit that expensive watches are jewelry, like a nice pearl necklace. You do it because it looks good and makes you feel manly, not because it's practical. I commend your honesty.

I have no problem with the watches or vanity.

Its the dishonestly, disingenuity, and self delusion leading to false rationale that are dangerous, and responsible for much that ails society.

Speaking of dishonesty and self delusion, I was replying that those who sniff that they have a phone so they don't need a watch apparently don't use them in situations where watches are impracticle, and there was never any mention of brand or price or comparison to others. The actual quote was something like "oh, and for those "I use my phone douches, just try doing that when you're driving or kayaking"

Please feel free to make up whatever seems convenient for you to try to make some point though when mentioning dishonesty and self delusion.

I am honest in saying what I say re: kayaking. I don't do it. Honest. I am not deluding myself to try to convince you that I do kayak. I used DIVING and kayaking as throw away examples, following you doing the same.

Your argument that expensive watches are not jewelry that makes you feel good is amusing. You've attempted every rationale and failed. You just have yet to admit it to yourself.

You like that watches because you like blingy shit that makes you feel a certain way. I have no problem with that. Its your dishonest, and disingenuous false rationales that are a problem for you, many like you, and are dangerous for society in general.

Admit it, your fancy-dancy watch is just like a pearl necklace.

So first you sorta admit that you weren't (let's be nice) quite accurate in quoting me.

And now it's my argument that expensive watches aren;t jewelry? Really? Where did I ever say that expensive watches aren't jewelry? Please show me. Please. Anywhere in any of these posts. Please, just give me a post number.

You gotta stop making shit up. Honest. Someone harping on dishonesty and self delusion who then goes on making stuff up, well, OK, look sorta stupid now.

So anyway, just give me a post number, or admit you're FOS.

    Investment.

    DIVING.

    Kayaking.

    Investment.

The bottom line is that most of the watches mentioned aren't worth squat after they leave the jewelers case, whereas a Rolex holds pretty well, so yeah, you'll pay up front but will get a good chunk back later.

Oh, and for the "I use my phone" douches, just try using that when diving, or kayaking, or, or. Dumb.

Like on a chairlift when everyone has a phone but they ask me for the time.

Sooooooo, if bought at a good price, at least you (shouldn't) lose on them (btw, same with cars, ski lodges etc - not so much on boats). There's an old maxim - buy low, sell high - try to remember that one.

Hopefully that part's out of the way

I guess it depends on where you live, but the locals with serious cash where I used to live and where I am now didn't know sawdust, pick-ups or diesels - those are often the people who come to take care of things for them. Nothing against people who do the "real" work on a daily basis as I did that for years, but in non-northern BC the real money is typically made behind a desk of some kind (cue the I know someone......nitwits).

Many others that also fit the catagory depending on (reasonable) acquisition price are Breitling, (maybe) Omega, Cartier etc, but for a quick cash sale, usually Rolex comes out on top.

You're quite correct, a relatively cheap Suunto is more useful. A $25 Wal-Mart whatever also has more useful functions by far. Not really the subject of conversation though.

Not a wine flipper. Watches and cars are what I like to play at and try to make a couple of bucks while fooling with what I enjoy. Seems like such a difficult subject for some to grasp.

Wearing a Rolex, like wearing a pearl necklace, makes you feel manly.

OK, so back on topic and let's try to go troll free.

I've always wanted an Omega Seamaster, just as a James Bond tribute - anyone have one and has it stood up well? I saw one a couple of days ago and all of the plating had come off the hour hand.

i got a stainless Submariner with the black face for my 40th birthday. I like the way it looks, use my phone if i really want to know what time it is, and think it looks good on retro day or when im wearing my tux. since it was a gift my outsized ego is irrelevant. i set the dial to time how long i can stand the heat in the steam room. The 5 year tune up cost $500.00 IIRC that sucked.

I have spent less on watches then most of you have on skis. A good watch will last a hundred years, how many iPhones will you guys have gone through in that time. A nice watch is man jewelry, so the fuck what. A nice watch is a precision piece of machinery, it just just inherently beautiful in it's construction. Is it worth several grand? No, so the fuck what. Neither is a Ferrari on a string of pearls, but both have a beauty of their own. If giving my wife a string of pearls leads to passionate sex, it is well worth it. It is all in your perspective.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Pretty much this exactly. My Grandfather told me once that men are judged by their watches and their shoes. And if you do it right, you only have to buy them once.
