Spoiler alert LOL! So cool she pulled it together and stomped the landing :-) I guess the Olympics was just her trying a little too hard. No big deal. She is BACK!

With winning her 4th Big Globe she has now climbed to 4th in the All-Time Super Rankings!

    Super Rankings:

    Marcel Hischer 359,400
    Lindsey Vonn 297,000
    Ingemar Stenmark 290,100
    Mikaela Shiffrin 286,900
    Annmarie Proell 272,500

Proell was a truly remarkable skier and an even better person. If she hadn’t taken off a lot of time to care for her ailing farther, she would have won even more than she had. Watching her ski, in what YouTube footage there is, is a thing of beauty.

The notion that Shiffrin is a technical skier who dabbles in speed events is warranted, but that's some amazing dabbling.

15 total world cup starts in downhill, she has 6 podiums and 3 wins.

22 total world cup starts in super g, she has 9 podiums and 4 wins.

I caught a shuttle with a US team coach a hundred years ago from the airport to PC. Mikaela was just coming onto the scene and he said wait until you see her race dh. She will and can dominate any discipline she focuses on. My jaw dropped.

If she beefed up a little she'd probably dominate the speed events. She's a gazelle not a cheetah. Another 10-15 pounds would definitely help her there.

    Sweeping generalizations follow:
Body type matters. Lyndsey was built for speed events. Mikela seems built for GS / slalom. She will overcome that through incredible talent, and course type.

She is an amazing athlete and fun to watch. There isn't a time when she is in the starting gate where she doesn't have a chance to win.

Generalization is fact. Weight matters when gravity and friction are in the equation. Ya, a better light skier beats a heavier almost as good skier.. But, technique equal a heavier skier wins. That's how I beat my kid.

    reactively,
    please remember Charles,
    sometimes, less is more...

MS doesn't need to be heavier
( remember, you are talking about A Woman ) ,

to Win, She just needs to get from the Start to the Finish in the least amount of Time
( I would not put heavier on the list )

Annemarie was a short dynamo - with the Best ski legs of Two generations
( I will never forget reading,
She would have a smoke (cigarette) ,
step into the starting gate , and
    kick everyone's butt.

    Six-time champ.
retired at Twenty-six in 1980 after winning the Olympic Downhill
( After she took 1976 off to care for her ailing father ) )

    it was a different era...

    heavier... no.

Mikaela Shiffrin is a ski racer. (!!!)
    Darned few compare -

I found a new old name.
    Jean-Claude Killy

    ( take a look at 1967 )

    Four-time Champion !
    WayToGo ! MikaelaShriffrin ! !!!

Beat Feuz looks like he carries some extra pounds just to have the mass, and it’s been working quite well for him, so I’m going to agree that weight matters for DH.

anecdotes are just that. Franz Klammer wasn't a fattie. He's got twice as many DH victories as Beat. Peter Müller has way more too and also, not a fattie.
There are times and speeds on a course when weight helps to escape the friction, and times when weight causes more friction. It's all about inertia and direction of force. That's where techinique matters

What does that have to do with anything related to training and ideal body mass for speed events versus tech events?

in my experience, probably More to do with having the shortest Time from Start to Finish than mass has to do with being "fastest" -

( see the comment about Ammemarie M.P..
There were several women who had More Mass.
They could not ski Annemarie's line, and they could not make Ammemarie's turns, and they did not have Annemarie's aerodynamics.

    If it's all about Mass,
weigh 'em in at the bib draw and award the results for mass.

( you 're better than this sjg )

She just won the Downhill on five runs since LakeLouise ( December fourth ) -
If you really think Twenty More Pounds is going to improve her times ,,,
it probably has a greater likelihood of improving the chances of crashing and improving the chances of injury...

    Just no.

20 more pounds in the right places, all muscle, would help her in DH and SG. Moot though because she devotes way more focus to SL..

There was a brief time when some lighter USSA racers were wearing loaded weight belts in DH. It's against the rules to do so now.
