She ran a downhill? Is that her first one of the year? I know she's run some Super Gs, but haven't noticed any DHs to date.

ETA: looks like it was a combined with Super G, not DH, wasn't aware that they did those.

Just looked at the results, she was 7th after the downhill run? Holy shit! The other ladies must have looked at that and said "fuck it, we're fighting for 2nd place".

When you are seconds faster in slalom of most, including specialists, the. You can be top 10 with a chance in the combined, especially now that it's run with the Super G

Tessa Worley skied fast and under control. Mikaela had some trouble in a couple turns, but, per the norm for her, put the pedal to the metal and took the lead by 0.20.....

Mikaela leading by .20 over Worley half way through the first run of the Squaw Valley GS event.

    Edit...

Mikaela was skiing soooooo much faster than anyone else into that corner that she skidded late into. If she could have held that edge a little better she would have be close to a second ahead of Worley.

This is a thing they do with course sets nowadays that often catches the hell-bent-for-election run-and-gunners.

Wicked! I'm not sure how she lost so much time to Brignone--but, of course, she got back on track and pulled out the W anyhow!

Hoping locals that attended post some pics. The crowd was going wild based on what I could see on the live stream.

Looks like she was skiing very conservative through the middle section, probably making sure she made no mistakes. When she heard the crowd reaction at her being behind you can see her start driving the direct power line to take back the lead.

Get in the groupie line boys. She was definitely giving me the eye after her spring training last year at Loveland. Although maybe she just wanted a look inside the van.

(This is right before she pulled up next to us in her/coach's Audi and started unloading a huge quiver of skis.)

Seriously though. She is incredible to watch on the course. I'm not sure if it is natural or if she's had great coaching but her mental game is obviously among the best in the field.

She's gonna be around for a long while and I have to say I like her off-the-hill style a great deal. She's a heckuva a role model for young female racers. Way less dramatic and look-at-me-than-Vonn.

Yeah she's humble. I follow her Instagram and she posts a lot but I can never figure out if she won a race. She never says anything about it when she does.

Vonn's Insta, on the other hand, seems like more modeling pics than anything else. I mean she's nice looking but it gets a little bizarre after awhile.

Shiffrin is still a small town local girl. See her running, training, at the store, etc...all the time in the summer. She still lives at home but I wonder when she'll want to get her own place and such. We see Vonnegut quite a bit too but her sister lives in LA and she spends a bunch of time out there too. Difference between a 22 and 36 year old.

So you saying Vonn's the 22 year old, right?? Cuz at least for the moment Michaela seems like an old soul in a young (smoking hot) body.

She does seem like an old soul... or someone who has spent all of her time skiing... or both. She's famous now but on course to get really famous... hopefully she handles it well. It ain't easy.

Love Shiffrin and all but if I'm gonna pick an athlete to be a groupie of it would be her good friend Goggia. Shiffrin is so centered and bulletproof....hard for me to relate to that. To me, save for her skiing, she seems all of 22.

Vonn doesn't give a shit what we think. She likes poking people and pushing our comfort zone and she can because she is the speed queen. I like that about her.

I have no issue with Vonn and her publicity. She knows she's in a sport where it could all end tomorrow. Make that money while you can and set yourself up for life after racing.

Judging by body language when she finishes races, she is really starting to struggle with how she is "supposed" to act. She knows she is getting past the point of "golly gee, I won that race, I'm so surprised". Rolling out that reaction has become forced to some extent.

At this point she is the best racer on the hill by a wide margin and everyone knows it. She is trying to balance her reaction with "I'm the best and I just beat you by three touchdowns" and "I won but I respect my opponents and they are my friends". That can be an exhausting line to walk and she will be walking it for many years to come.
