Ayas Freeski,
The entire scientific community has been conspiring with The Man for decades now with specific intentions of deceiving you so that you and so many others will stop buying ground beef and bacon and instead "waste" all your money on fruits and vegetables. Additionally, they've been trading secrets with the evil medical infrastructure and big pharma in order to mix terrible recipe that will leave you sick and weak and fat till the end of your days.
Congratulations!!!!! You've found a savior in Nora Gedgaudas, the worlds most brilliant and well educated certified nutritional consultant/certified nutritional specialist, coveted titles only granted to the precious few who are deemed smarter than all. Proof of her superior intellect is that she has published a book and further proof is seen when countless followers quote her tirelessly on internet forums in their continuing efforts to invalidate the "real experts".
I wish you well on your victory. You have won the awesome life award.

When are people going to stop hold up the Inuit as proof that an all whale blubber diet is the key to life. They are what, .001% of the world population? Hell, Hindus are a hell of a lot more common, and they don't even eat meat.

I wasn't holding them up as the key to life, just showing that a low carb diet works just fine for a group of people that have been around for a very long time, dispelling the myth that it rots your brain and is super bad for you.
Whoever wrote that Ribeyes, loins, and Strip steaks are the lean meats on an animal has no fucking clue. They're the tender meats for a reason: fat marbling.

Hutash is right. The Inuit are, small, fat, round people who sleep most of the winter and who's environment allows them to eat like that. I doubt they live to 100 Years Old either.

...and the California native Americas lived on a diet massively high in carb (acorns), but like Da Blunt said, I doubt the lived to 100 (in fact, I know they didn't). The point is, holding up small groups as the ideal generally doesn't work (not saying you did, but others have.)
But, I agree on the ribeye, et al, nicely marbled steak is yummy.

Whats all this fear about people slipping into ketoacidosis? Maybe if your diabetic or a drunk but otherwise I'd think most people could get by without it. A common theme in keto is low carb. Why is this so scary? You ram glucose into your body at a constant rate it will continue to store fat and energy because times are great. Glucose stimulates insulin, and insulin runs around telling your fat tissue to take up glucose and fat. Its no wonder so many people have positive results with Atkins and weight loss. Fats? delicious! Energy power houses (see below). Seems like the formal consensus with keto is high in fat. Where people go wrong is with proteins. Proteins in uber high amounts are no good for energy especially if you are low in glucose. Lots of talk here about keytone bodies... they can be metabolized by the brain and tissue... Sure the capacity to do so isn't awesome so don't go overboard, but we have a bicarbonate buffer system and several enzymes that can turn that ketofrown back to CoA. I'd imagine that someone months into keto would be 'adapted' to burn ketones without getting acidodic. I've tried ketosis before and didn't love it. Instead high fat, low carb and protein work for me. I don't dip into ketosis and have plenty of energy as long as I eat lots of fat.

I don't get what is so hard about eating a reasonable diet and exercising.
If you're really concerned about losing weight start keeping track of what you eat. Plug everything into something like myfitnesspal or livestrong etc. Most people are going to be very surprised at how much they are actually consuming.Last edited by jamal; 12-16-2012 at 07:34 PM.

the kicker is that people who do these keto diets long term are probably reprogramming their body to actually store fat. Its been shown after things like major famine that the body will shuttle more fats toward storage in case to have in an emergency

Yeah, I've heard of that before. Army Ranger School, famine, other stuff where your body isn't getting enough calories will program your body to store fat and when you start eating normal again, you gain a bunch of fatty weight.
I didn't really read this whole thread because fad diets of any kind are retarded, even paelio. Yeah, I said that.
Carbs are cheap, and we're programmed by Evolution to seek them out because they used to be rare in nature. Same with fat. It doesn't mean that it's bad for you; whole grains are very good for you, and important parts of your body are made of fat like your eyes, brain, and nervous system.
Here's a good diet: Cook what you eat as often as you can. Try to avoid high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils and other god knows whats. If you're not hungry enough to eat an apple, DON'T EAT, FAT ASS.

I did that a bout 2.5 years ago, lost 40lbs and then went off the wagon and gained it all back in 2017 (fuck). So now I am clearly aware that carbs and processed foods are not my friend. Last Tuesday I said that is it and have limited myself to 1000 calories a day and very little carbs. Down 8 lbs today. That is motivation to keep going so I am in great winter surfing and skiing shape again. Btw, staying away from carbs results in less hunger pangs and low blood sugar spin outs for me.

Ketogenesis
How does one have the fuel in the tank to ride hard for 3 hours without pasta and beer in their regiment? Or is physical activity not part of the program? No carbs makes no sense to me.

I am not riding even 10 minutes a day, so ya, I can maintain on the low calories while idle. For dinner before surfing the next day, I will eat a normal meal. Big difference for me is no more 4 beers a day with chips and salsa. Eat a light breakfast snack, then lunch and I am done for the day. It isn't hard. Obviously, once I get more active and am just maintaining rather than losing weight, I can eat more. I just need to stop the booze.

It is possible.
I'm eating a lot less carbs, still about 50g a day.
On a 3 hour mountain bike ride, 1500 calories expended, I don't eat carbs, Just far and protein, and I seen to have enough energy. Not sure how it works though.
I'm definitely not in ketosis though.

I went on a keto diet a couple years ago. Lost 60 lbs in 4 months. But I ended up in the hospital with pleural effusion, and had to have fluid drained from around my lungs. Can’t say for sure it was due to the keto diet, and haven’t seen that listed as a possible side effect, but I think it is pretty coincidental, if nothing else. I’d caution to be careful about overdoing it. A huge weight loss in a short time might not be the healthiest thing to do.

Because the body is burning fat for energy, not carbs. What I have found, however, is that I can exercise at moderate levels with no issues (heck I don't even have to have eaten, because lord knows I have enough fat stores in my body). But the sprinting/anaerobic exercise does cause problems, because that requires faster energy. So I chug some gatorade before mt bike rides, and it seems to do the trick for the sprint bursts.

I've been doing LCHF for a few months now, though I was fat-adapted before, evidenced by doing 20+ mile runs on just a cup of black coffee. I have no problems doing long endurance efforts, HIIT work on the spin bike, or lifting weights, all fasted, all with little carbohydrate in my diet.

^^ what Bean said. I went really low carb for some months but have long been back on carbs, but not like I used to be. But I feel my body got trained to feed off the fat.
for instance I eat no bread now unless it's pizza crust. Because no way I am quitting pizza. I'll just have a couple slices instead of a whole large pep now. And beer, sure it tastes great and I'm addicted to IPA's which are even worse, but they taste a lot better if you have one or 4 when the occasion is right; not one a day. I've cut the beer consumption way down. Also sugar: I lay way off the sweets. Potato chips? I can never quit them. Life is too short to give those up.
I do tons of cardio (road and mtn bike mostly) and I'd always need food during rides. Now I'd not even think about taking anything but water on anything less than a 3.5 to 4 hour hard push. After that yeah, I need to start ingesting something.
i admit I was 5 to 10 lbs lighter when really tightly limiting the carb intake.
