    Well, this is crazy...

Only three or four years ago I was clicking photos with a point and shoot camera and posting em in trip reports here. Some of those TRs led to ski trips with people who I'd only known by screen names before. Trackhead introduced me to NoHow, who invited me on an AK expedition and a year ago Powder ran photos and a story about that trip. That was the first time stuff I made was published.

A lot of working photographers have well-founded reservations about sharing work for free. Magazines are particular about not printing photos that have been blogged and that's a big disincentivizer for posting photos one thinks might sell. In my experience, sharing work without hope of getting paid for it has benefits that are hard to quanitfy but are very real.

From getting hooked up to attend GordyCamp, to the Revelations trip, to a Smith/TGR/Iceaxe Expeditions contest that landed me in Antarctica last year, there's absolutely no way I'd have a stack of business cards that say I'm employed as a photographer without a lot of generous opportunities from the TetonGravity forum.

Last winter, I took this pic from the Wildcat chair at Alta as bros who got first chair were ripping the liftline. I dont know who it is. If it's someone who posts here, well, that would just be awesome.

I told Powho way back in the day, that a photo just like that, in a similar spot, from the Kitty would sell like hotcakes. He didn't want it. Way to make it happen Gnar! Congrats on the cover of the greatest ski mag ever!!

    Congrats!!!

I dream about being reborn as a photographer. You made it happen for yourself.

About blogging photos: If no one ever sees your work, how can you get discovered? It's a great idea, especially if you watermark the images.

congratulations. Hopefully you'll still post some TR'S. In my opinion the best trips are the ones you do with friends for the adventure. Not the staged crap for money.
