The best thing about Cinnamon pass is that they plow it by mid to late May providing incredible drive up 4x4 access for spring skiing

Sounds like less then the rest of the state per Joel Gratz. North is skiing well, and mixed bag depending on aspect and the day. The last couple storms still made for nice boot high snow.

The vistas draw me always, but is it worth a 20 hour butt in sled seat roll across the great basin?

For the tour, good coverage, low expectations for turns and high tolerance for less than stellar current snow????

If it gets colder again and a foot or more of snow, it could be worth it.

Yes, but, I'm not getting that potential for the next week in any of the forecasts. Drat.

Commodore and the playground were skiing very well as of Saturday. But as Alpinord said, it's really variable right now. North is skiing good still, but this 6 week period of warmth and sun has really put the hurt on the area.

I hate to say it, but if you're looking at a 20 hour drive I'd go elsewhere.

@Alpinord You must have been part of the other group that was on Commodore around 11 on Saturday. I was part of the group who came up right behind you guys. We had been talking about checking out Grandmas/Grandpas but decided against it. Whoever I ended up hitch hiking with had mentioned skiing RM3 a couple weeks back.

There's the rub. We often get surprises, but nothing to bank on for your time frame. We are due, dammit!

I was wondering if there was a Mag or two in the group. Nice sort of meeting you.

Yeah, Champions was windpacked at the top but the rest was sweet.

Here's to the San Juan cutoff low!
I think I'll bag it for now and ski the good snow here in the PNW for a few more days. Damn, though I miss the San Juans.

Anyone going to bump this thread with some 16/17 stoke? It's been a pretty good December!

We saw a small slide across cement creek on a SE face, but didn't see any signs of instability where we were skiing on lower n. facing glades.

I guess you are located in Silverton. Is wolfcreek meadow skipping included in the San Juans? It has been good here. that said wouldn't mind bagging some bigger stuff in the next couple of weeks if the alpine stuff is in over your way. Or Telluride if any one is over there.

    San Juan Goodness

It's been a good season so far but, we need some snow to freshen things up!

First picture-saw some interesting lenticular clouds as we neared Porphyry Peak before the last storm cycle.

Awesome day today. Hit what we have for alpine today. Luckily some better skiers put the skin track in so it was easy. They hit some steeper north facing stuff. I was solo so took a south facing shot not quite as steep or rocky. Pretty nice skiing corn at 12000 ft in December. How is the alpine skiing up north. skiing off the peaks? Looks like a pretty good reset coming on Saturday.

The snowpack stabilized this past week from high to low avy danger. The temperatures have dropped and finally cold, light snow has been dumping on top of an excellent base. Now the avy danger is back up to considerable and high is forecasted for tomorrow. Due to the danger level, the trees are the call and lots of fun. Telluride is claiming 18" new this AM. They have been behind everyone in Colorado this season. Nice to see they now have over five feet now.

It was a great day with Purgatory Snowcat Adventures (formerly San Juan Untracked) and a fun group of skiers and boarders. There's a 25% off promo this month for Purg pass holders.

    Best regards, Terry

It appears the Durango boys are maximizing the powder options as usual. Looks like some sweet turns.
