I wonder if that conveyor boom is all electric over hydraulics? Does the barge have big gensets, or does it plug into the tug? Or does the barge machinery hydraulic pumps PTO off the tug engines?

I’m not sure. Good question. If one of the Vanenkevort rigs shows up during the daylight I’ll try to get more photos.

Today is another gnar day, with 18-20’ seas but now with freezing temps.

All the usual lakers appear to be hunkered into various bays and hidey holes, but there’s this ship I’ve never seen, from Cypress, right out in the middle of the worst part of it. I bet those guys are having themselves an adventure tonight.

    Also, thanks for this thread!

Um, sometimes I don’t exactly feel great about moving back here, and I really take this whole thing of living near the dock for granted. This has helped me reconnect with a cool thing here, and I appreciate that.

The Isa made it to Whitefish bay hauling ass with that 50 mph tailwind, and has been nooked in there since, probably working their asses off trying to de-ice. I have to imagine a level of relief today, they were in the worst spot while the whole rest of the fleet had retreated to safe harbors.

You’re not the only one here that appreciates the lore and the romanticism of the Great Lakes, and that’s a good thing.

Its said she never gives up her dead.

2022 shipping season is on !

Duluth website showing the Paul R Tregurtha departing tomorrow at 3am with a load of coal. Looks like the Edger B Speer rounded Copper Harbor and is headed across the lake for Two Harbors at 14 knots to pickup a load of taconite.

Good link for tracking ships on Lake Superior.

edit to add link for Duluth harbor schedule

I’ll be flying up to the north coast next month and expect to see some of those ladies dropping ore next to the Factory of Sadness by then.

Here is another good website for tracking ships on Lake Superior. Looks like both American Century and Burns Harbor are inbound to Duluth.

We still have a lot of ice.
I think it might still be a while until ships are in and trucks are shaking my house. I kind of like the absence of mine trucks. Won’t be long now though.

Warning: That website leads to at least a 2 hr rabbit hole of exploring ships throughout the world
I had no idea there were that many ships moving across the oceans at any given time.

My guess would be it makes a lot of runs through locks and the company doesn't repaint very often?

I wonder if we we can see iceman's boat? He has a boat or a ship?

Perhaps I spend time later and find all of Russian oligarch boats?

This is cool. Live camera shows the Coast Guard icebreaker clearing the way for a big ship about to enter the Duluth harbor.

Ship that just entered the harbor is the American Century. I see another ship out on the horizon, that must be the Burns Harbor.
