I'm a volunteer patroller at CP and have plenty of days up there this year. I'll ski there tomorrow. I've been looking for an excuse to check BV out and since military skis free on Sunday AND the Saturday storm looks to target BV and north towards Tahoe, I thought this could be the perfect weekend to finally go.

If you don’t follow BV’s Facebook feed you should. My boss puts out a lot of good information. Here’s today’s update...

    ❄️❄️❄️

    Hey Good People!
I wanted to share some pics from today's avalanche control morning 2-11-2019.
What we do on Avalanche Control is well......pretty gnarly. On days when all seems beautiful bluebird like, things can change quickly. The pics below are of the biggest Avalanche I have ever seen in the lower Mtn in my 26 years doing this kind of work here. For those that know the area well the slide started at the top of the Infinity Bowl and came to arrest just below the bottom of the Grizz Chair. It had crown depths of 5-8', 400' wide and ran 1300' vertical. It took out 4 other paths with it. I show this to give all ya'll some reference of what we're doing to make things safe in the Grizz Bowl and Upper Mtn. Even on Bluebird days when things seem stable a single 2lb shot placed in the right spot can produce devastating results. This avalanche broke trees and left 15' of debris at the bottom next to the Grizz Chair. From my experience here this tells me a few other similar slabs are lurking out there so we plan to address them Tuesday morning but if they persist I will most likely keep it closed to let bonding continue to help us out and keep all ya'll safe.
I would like to thank all the skiers and riders here who stop by Grizz Top and thank us for the work we do. It means a lot to myself and my crew. It's what we train for and love to do. So thank a Ski Patroller when you get a chance because we care too.
    Peace Out,
    Mattly

WOW that slide looks Powerful! I am always appreciative of what you guys do over there on the lower Mt., Mike. Really Thanks Again! The SB/squawpine ski buses couldn't make it back over the passes so we had to take all the bus riders to Reno to over night. So even the short closure of HWY4 was still pretty all weather. I look forward to coming up again for some spring days later on my days off. Last Sunday I got to Storm ride/ski at Bear and it was fresh refills all day. Peace Out!

BV closed today and Thursday due to high avalanche danger, high winds, and a lotta fuggin rain.

    BV will open tomorrow.

We will not be opening Grizz for a few days. It’s going to take quite a bit of work to open the rest of the mountain.

I bet. Seems like snow level fluctuated quite a bit. Layers.

Is it snowing to the base of Griz now?

CalTrans is saying closed until noon tomorrow.

The few folks that made it up today sure got a treat. Usually it’s a big goat rodeo on pow days, but today it was mellower. The snow was really touchy this morning. You’d fart at something and it would slide.

Trapped in Bear Valley. It’s our own private ski area for those few in town. The skiing is fantastic.

The wind is already moving snow ahead of the storm. 6’ or more in the forecast for this week, including 2-3’ in the next 24 hours.

Tuesdays are 2 for 1 lift tickets at Bear Valley.

Got to Bear a little early this morning. A few minutes shorter than the planned trip to Kwood. Carson spur was still closed when I was leaving so Bear looked a lot more attractive. 2" on the backside skied like crispy mashed potatoes, but the front was 4-6" of bottomless cream cheese. I guess it isn't a good thing when you are sitting on an unmoving chair and everybody skis away from the loading line.

After 10 or 15 minutes and a snack, the chair started up, and at the top I was warned that Moke Lift would be off for a bit. 2 backside runs later Mikey was at the top lift shack to us know that the lift was back on.
I left a bit after noon when I realized how wet I was getting. Skiing was great because there were maybe 100 people skiing/boarding. and somebody hid the moguls - awesome storm groom

‘Twas good to see you John. The skiing was fun all day even if the lifts and the weather weren’t. I’m glad I can help my friends have fun.
