The area that I shoveled out around my rig before dinner, at Bear, has at least two feet on it now.

Great write-up on the Dodge Ridge wind event. Wild. It's awesome to have these events documented. Were many of the downed trees otherwise healthy or mostly beetle+drought kill?

One suggestion as you write is to take extra care with word choice, especially when describing extreme or notable events. 'Unprecedented' is a very strong term and can get you into some trouble unless you do a lot of extra work, whereas 'rare' is much less likely to do so. Not that anyone is really checking, but just a comment from my perspective as one who writes about a lot of weather and climate extremes. For example, other extreme evil east/Mono wind events occurred at Kirkwood last year (the still-questionable 209 mph reading, but based on impacts it was certainly roaring) and the November 2011 blow-down in Mono County where the Mammoth anemometer pinned at it's max of 185 mph for quite some time. Most certainly rare for the central Sierra Nevada, but I'd argue not unprecedented for the region.

    Enjoy the pow down there!

A lot of shoveling. And exit stage left, if the road is open. 4 Never closes, right?

I have gotten too old for this level of storm. 10 years ago, in the Woods RV lot, this would’ve simply been fun. But my Bella can’t bounce thru the snow the same, either. Carrying a 70 lb dog, in the dark, thru snow drifts, trying to find a spot where she will pee: priceless. Probably have to leave her home for any other Big storm trips. She will not like that. She loves snow.
Although I am probably done with Big storm trips, too. Start passing on the atmospheric rivers.
    Getting old sucks.

I am very thankful that Bear has allowed me to stay here, parked in one spot. I have not given up hope that KW again has a RV Pass...

    thank you

    I just posted another

    and I used “unprecedented”

no one I know has seen that here

I am going to edit that

the thing is - mono winds are not rare

the damage is unprecedented in the context of the ski area

almost lost a good friend to snow immersion today

he was under the snow 10-12 minutes - no pulse or respirations when patrol got him out - got him back with CPR - alive - having seizures when he went in the back of the ambulance

It’s handy to have a ski patroller around. I’m glad you were there.

    I didn’t do shit.

I was hiking alone to the top because I’m anti-social and was not going to wait in a fucking line.

I stumbled upon it all at the tail end.

When I was in Boy Scouts, we did an annual trip up to some cabins around there. The kids that could afford it skied at Dodge, I couldn’t afford, so we did he sled hill at Strawberry iirc. Never skied it once I started sadly.
Sounds like tomorrow will be amazeballs.

Edit: sorry to hear about your friend. Hope for a full and rapid recovery. A lot of snow is fun, but dangerous for sure.

Dude you are 100% allowed to be a mess, and glad your friend got his life back.

    Be safe out there, man.
