KW was indeed fun today. Buddy got lots of face shots... I'm too tall We worked like demons, straight through, to try and flatten it down for y'all. Found some deep and some not as deep. Trying to attach an afternoon photo of 99 steps for you but don't really know what I'm doing (prolly too big).

hey guys. kinda new to the area. thinking of touring up sherwood(backside of alpine) tomorrow.

Is it legit to park in that little lot back there? Theres a sign saying something about homeowners only?

Dont wanna get towed. I have parked up there before for late spring corn tours but now that its getting to be winter im wondering if this will be a problem.

    Anybody know about this?

I always thought it was ok to park there until Sherwood opens.

I suspect that Alpine has signs up there saying no trespassing, closed area, etc.

Have parked there a number of times early season for touring before Sherwood opened. My understanding is it is all right with the HOA until the lift opens.

How recently, Lego? I know that Alpine put signs up on the front side in mid-November.

I parked back there almost everyday of the 10/11 season and a small handful of times last year. There are a handful of spots without any signs if you go past and around the homeowners lot.

    Kirkwood, 12-14-2012

Wife Sarah and I had a great first day (for us) of the ski season at Kirkwood. First time there, and we loved it. They claim to have gotten 21 inches from the storm a few days ago, and with the cold temps, it was well preserved, so surfaces were powder on ungroomed and packed powder on groomed all over. Only small downer was that your skis still bottom out in the troughs of some bumps on steep ungroomed. I presume that this is the remnants of the rain event that preceded this last big storm. My skis also got a little ‘’bite’’ from a small shark lurking in one of these troughs, but nothing serious. Day started out bluebird, but it started to snow around noon and snowed the rest of the day – not heavily, but steadily. Judging from the accumulation on our car, it was around an inch by the time we left, and it was still coming down. We left a bit early, since my quads had had about as much fun as they could handle on the first day out, plus I was starting to get nervous that with the new snow, they might impose a chain requirement for the roads, which seems pretty common here. As it turned out, the roads weren’t bad, but I wouldn’t want to be driving them in the dark. All in all, a wonderful day, although our spirits were really depressed by the news from Connecticut. What a tragedy…
And BTW, snow is still coming down at Heavenly where we are staying.

Kirkwood was excellent today. I am a "long time listener, first time caller" to this thread and have appreciated the beta over the years so I figured I'd start contributing. Once was was surprisingly good for this early in the year - Firm but light blower in the apron/run out as. The trees under once and heart chute still had a lot of light churned up pow that the trees managed to hold on to. Attachment 127974

now we're back to the part about me being dumb again

but it wouldn't matter, as the movie ticket has my name on it too

The homeowners assc controls those spaces and has always been cool w parking there until the lift starts operating. Be cool about it and I imagine that will continue to be the case. Has nothing to do w Alpine Mgmt. and the signs that were put up out front. Grouse Rock is not part of their lease (which in any case, I do not believe gives them the ability to prevent human powered access when they are not in operation).

Sugar Bowl ski resort, the Tahoe’s most backcountry friendly resort will be hosting a Backcountry Ball next Sunday, Dec. 16th from 3pm to 6pm upstairs in the Judah Lodge.

    What: Apres Ski Backcountry Ball

    When: Sunday, Dec. 16th from 3pm — 6pm

    Cost: FREE

    PRESS RELEASE:
Both seasoned backcountry skiers and resort skiers curious about what lies beyond the resort boundary will have the chance to preview the latest backcountry gear, talk to experts and learn about guided backcountry trips at Sugar Bowl Resort’s après ski Backcountry Ball event on Sunday, Dec. 16.

Sugar Bowl Ski Ambassador Daron Rahlves will host the event, ski brands such as Atomic will showcase their latest backcountry-specific gear, and informational booths by organizations including Alpine Skills International and the Sierra Snowkite Center will educate skiers and riders on the local backcountry offerings.

“Sugar Bowl’s commitment to backcountry skiing goes beyond a simple open boundary policy,” said John Monson, Director of Marketing for Sugar Bowl Resort. “As the only resort in Tahoe with a full-service backcountry adventure center, we provide education, information and training for everyone from the novice backcountry skier to the seasoned veteran. The Backcountry Ball celebrates Sugar Bowl’s commitment to backcountry skiing.”

Backcountry skiing’s popularity has grown rapidly in the last five years as advancements in gear provide easier access to more backcountry terrain. Sugar Bowl’s open boundary policy and expansive neighboring backcountry terrain has made it a favorite destination of skiers and riders interested in both lift-assisted backcountry skiing and long backcountry tours in world-class terrain.

Sugar Bowl Resort responded to that demand by partnering with internationally acclaimed guide service Alpine Skills International to open the resort’s Backcountry Adventure Center, a full-service backcountry guide, rental and education center in 2009.

Backcountry Ball attendees can talk with Alpine Skills International guides about the season-long schedule of guided tours, avalanche education workshops and other services offered at Sugar Bowl’s Backcountry Adventure Center.

The event will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Coldstream Room upstairs in the Mt. Judah Lodge. The Backcountry Ball is free and open to all members of the public.

Late tours have been money for the sunsets this week:

Planning on another evening ski tomorrow, but maybe just at Northstar. Sunday, we will probably be at Rose/Tamarack again, but likely a bit earlier.

BTW, on Andesite today, the snow was great. Light pow holding up very well with little sun, cold temps and almost no wind. If you didn't hear about it from SAC, there is surface hoar everywhere and it's probably getting buried right now as it was snowing very lightly with barely a breeze.

Perfect snow conditions. Where is everybody? I suppose after last year it will take a while to get folks going.

Um, some of us work. Not me (well, I don't get paid), but some of us. When has mid week ever been crowded? Other than holidays.

So fresh snow falling? Maybe I will ride a lift tomorrow...
