I am in love with my V8 diesel land cruiser. Wish I could get one back home in the us.

Now there should be enough evidence to support the assertion that I'm some old dumb cunt, right? So it's well within reason that such a fine example of the station wagon is indeed available. I should have added, if I haven't been explicit, that I'd like a new v6 awd station wagon with a stick. And I admit to not being particularly fond of Subies, no offence to the legions of lovestruck Subaru adherents or latte swilling residents of groovy proto mountain urbs anywhere. But according to these Soldiers of Hitachi, I'm told that no such vehicle (a proper station wagon, V6, manual) is currently available.
If I'm still swirling around the drain of some designer drug flashback (2-5 dimethoxy 4-bromo phenethyl amine or alpha methyl triptamine possibly, among others), please, please please like James Brown please provide me a link.
As for the Volvos, yes well, I bought the Pirates Volvo, a 2006 V70 RRRRRR, used, in black. It may mightily fly the Jolliest Of Rogers (except for that asshole from the east coast), but I don't really like it that much. Yes it has awd, a 6 speed manual and 300 horses that shame as many splort cahs as it can, it drives like a shoebox in the corners and is pisswad expensive to fix since Volvo will not make the rom burner and new software available to anyone outside the dealers. It too is growing long in tooth with 66k on the dial, and I may consider keeping it for the long hauls between the San Juans and Cascades with stops in between, but I'd really rather get something else. Hence the quest, hence the rant.
For those of you who drive trucks, kudos. I hate the things and would just prefer something that drove reasonably well.Merde De Glace On the Freak When Ski

I'm getting a lowered FJ Cruiser and a wad of really crappy low quality gangsta rap mp3s to play on a set of woofers that will fill the cargo area.

I have 6 of them: a 92 Toyota Corolla with 200k+, a 99 Audi A4 Avant w/ 185k+, a 2003 Allroad with 140k+ and the Wolwo.
(edit forgot to add the 94 Toy 4 banger truck and the '65 Alfa Giulia Sprint GT)
But I'm thinking of selling the Volvo and would like to have the option of buying something other than an SUV or truck which is better to drive on the several 2000+ mile trips I take with my family every year.
Is that OK with you?
Fuck all, I'm not trying to tell you what the fuck you should have.Last edited by Buster Highmen; 10-17-2012 at 11:35 AM.

Buster I didn't know you had the little Alfa. Rad looking little car.
Now that this is more of a "what I want from the auto industry" thread I'll add in what I'd like.
I want a 4dr VW Golf TDI with awd and no options. No AC, no power windows, no power locks, bring back the manual crank sunroof, and vinyl flooring instead of carpet like the old trucks. Manual transmission of course.

I got as close as I could with our current vehicle.
2009 Jeep Patriot
5sp manual
4wd - auto default is 2wd until you spin the front tires - 4wd on is a 50/50 split - option to turn traction control off.
no AC
no power windows
no power locks
base steel rims
It's a pretty generic drive, no sporty, not 4x4 truck. I've driven it beyond it's intended 4x4 purposes and it's done well. It's got plenty of BC pinstriping from over grown logging road. Roof rack on top has been fully loaded with lumber and building supplies.
My ideal world is the bare bones Golf listed above and Vanagon Westfalia. Locking rear diff in a Westy and some really good tires and it will get where I need it to go off the pavement. No full Syncro rock crawling needed, just some extra clearance for water bars and more than 1wd.

Why don't you want power locks, windows or AC?
This coming from someone who had his power windows disabled after they kept falling into the door.

It's all added fluff that raises the price of the car.
Less crap to malfunction.
Like Buster pointed out in the PNW/South west BC we don't really need AC. Maybe a couple weeks a year it might be nice, but I bike commute to work so no useless sitting in traffic time for me. Weekend road trips I can roll down the windows and enjoy breeze. Wind noise too loud? I'll just slow down a touch, not really in a rush to get anywhere.
Full circle this is what most trucks used to be. No options, simple utilitarian vehicles. Trucks didn't need fluff because they were used for work not mall crawling.

Going to look at a taco this weekend. Thinking about replacing the FJ and the wife sedan with just one vehicle due to how little we drive and how much we use the light rail. I know this goes back to the first page, but I loved the size of the old Tundras and think the new ones are just insane. I like the size of the new Taco body, I just hope the wife feels like she wouldn't mind driving it.
She hates driving the FJ and yes I know they are the same size pretty much. The funny thing is, the FJ and the Taco are only 5 inches wider then her Hyundai, which feels tiny. I think it has to be how far the windshield is away from the driver that makes her feel like the FJ is too wide."We had nice 3 days in your autonomous mountain realm last weekend." - Tom from Austria (the Rax ski guy)

I have owned 2 Tacomas: a '96 2.7L and I currently own an '01 3.4L. Both Xtra cab/4wd/5spd. The 4cyl was a dog and the V6 is nicely powered. I love the size of the truck, and it gets used for pretty much everything except a people carrier (those back seats are a joke). Great work truck, great ski mountain vehicle, great wheeling support vehicle (carries parts, spare, and tools...gets to the features but it's not big enough to bang off rocks).
But I lived in Aus for 6 months and got to drive a 3.0 TD Hilux and a 4.4 TD FJ78, both manual. My question, which has been asked and answered many times over in this thread, is why can't we have that shit here? Toyota makes the best small diesel trucks in the world and we can't even buy them. Not that the 70 series Land Cruiser is small, but I would kill for a 75 pickup and/or a 78 troopy wagon with a 4.4 TD V8/5spd manual.
Idiotic.

I read this whole thread. I get the retro-grouch bit - I still miss the awesome simplicity and git'er'done'idness of my old Tyota Tercel AWD wagon. I drove that thing to the craziest places and she never failed me. Finally sold her for a case of beer with 340k on the odo - still going strong.
Now I got me a family and my 07 crew cab Tacoma fits the bill. Yeah it's got power windows, locks and a (gasp) automatic tranny - and guess what - it's awesome. The tranny in the Tacoma is the same one used in the Tundra - fuckin bombproof, and as someone mentioned before, better fuel economy than the manual. I used to figure I'd only drive a manual but hey that's old school tech now.
I found the cost analysis of diesel vs gas interesting ... Been looking at the tdi lately ... Will have to give it more thought.
Cheers!

I have a friend who bought a diesel out of a wrecked toyota Hilux. The motor was shipped to Seattle and installed in a 3rd generation 4runner. It bolted right in and transformed that vehicle. Great torque for towing and better fuel mileage. I have the same vehicle with the 3.4L v6 gas hog motor, but with a stick.

Old Toyotas are the shizz.
Converting this one to the 3.4, wish it was easier to do a diesel!

And Busta, while I know you despise and do not want an SUV, considering the limited options in the US, I still think you might want to consider the porsche cayenne with the 6 cyl/6 speed manual.
By the numbers, it handles and brakes better then most of the wagons we lust after, really defying its mass. If you want to totally bust the budget, you can upgrade the suspension and the brakes to the carbon ceramics and it will handle/brake like a sports car.
And it's a frickin stickshift!
Probably not too many pre-owned out there though and new would be pricey.
