Lindsey Vonn asks permission to enter menís downhill race

American Lindsey Vonn has asked the International Ski Federation (FIS) if she can enter a menís downhill race in Canada this season in an attempt to revamp the image of womenís alpine skiing.

The four-times overall World Cup champion sent a letter to menís race director Gunter Hujara, asking him about the possibility of competing in the menís downhill at Lake Louise, Alberta, where the first speed events of the season are taking place.

At this time, the women will be in Aspen, Colorado, racing a slalom and giant slalom.

Hujara and the Alpine Board considered the matter in Zurich this week during the FIS Autumn Meetings.

ďWe have been talking about it but no decision has been taken yet, itís a matter that the FIS Council has to examine during its next meeting in November,Ē said Norwayís Atle Skaardal, the womenís World Cup race director.

ďItís necessary to go through the rules to see if there is a way to do this and also a reason to do it.

ďItís complicated because no racer is supposed to ski on a race course a week prior to his or her own competition. If Lindsey Vonn could train and compete with the men in November, she would have a huge advantage on her rivals the following week during the womenís races on the same course,Ē Skaardal added.

The winner of 53 World Cup events in her career including 26 downhills, Vonn is the second most successful womenís downhill specialist behind Austriaís Annemarie Moser-Proell, who won 36 downhills between 1970 and 1980.

Last year, the American also became only the fourth woman to triumph in all five disciplines of modern alpine ski racing: downhill, slalom, giant slalom, Super-G and combined.

She narrowly failed to break the benchmark of 2,000 points set by Austriaís Hermann Maier in the 2000 World Cup, scoring 1,980 points to win her fourth overall crystal globe.

Experts believe the 2010 Olympic champion may lose as much as five seconds to the fastest men.

Read it again. The article says she will be 5 seconds slower than the fastest men. That means she will only be 4.5 seconds slower than the slowest men.

That would definitely revamp the image in a most positive way!
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

I would watch for sure. I think this should be viewed more as a polite "you bitches suck," to the other women than a, "I think I can compete with the dudes." She's a level above her competition and is finding ways to keep herself motivated.

Ah yes...Lindsey Vonn....she has nice form.

    Nice form skiing, too!

The FIS, being a pretty conservative organization run by european men, will most certainly deny her request.....but they could surprise us !!!!

I find the estimate of her being FIVE FULL SECONDS behind the top men a little hard to swallow. Races are won by hundredths of a second...five full seconds might as well be a century.

Damn....she sure is graceful on the boards, though!!!!

How much do you think Red Bull is paying her to plaster their stupid name everywhere?

She's good, but not that good. She's consistently winning on the women's circuit, but she's not blowing the competition out of the water by any means. If she wants to do it, let her do it. It's not going to help her cause. All it is going to do is have quantifiable data that says, she as fast (maybe) as the slowest men. Not a good way to revamp women's skiing.

Let her run. I sort of feel for the poor schlubs that gets beat by her will have to live with it the rest of the year on tour, but not really.

Actually, she did blow the competion away in several DH's last year including in the DH at lake Louise, winning by nearly 2 seconds. http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_1946086 She's been absolutely dominant at LL over the last several years and skis on men'd DH equipment.

I think she is probably closer to 2-3 seconds off the top men instead of a full 5 on a course like Lake Louise. She's a big girl by women's standards but is still giving up close to 50 lbs on many of the men's top DH'ers- Cuche wasn't tall at 5'9" but he was running @220lbs.

I'd kind of like to see this happen to give her an ego check...
Move upside and let the man go through...
