Some summer stoke from top of Crystal. First time up there in the summer, wild flowers were in full bloom and the sun was shining. Had a great lunch and hung out on top for the afternoon. It was a treat to see Mt.Adams, St.Helens, Rainier, and Baker all from one spot.

On one tour a few years ago that was pretty much the only skiable option, as the main face was a bunch of truly unskiable penitents.
On Monday and Tuesday this week, the main face was skiable only by following a recent set of tracks. Kind of like "slipping" a race course (back in my coaching days). You can even see our tracks in this picture from Monday, after both my partner (visible traversing out) and I had descended:
Let's see, what else ... on Monday, after hiking from Cold Springs trailhead to the ridge above the Crescent NRAG/SCG (not-really-a-glacier/so-called-glacier), was able to skin all the way to the summit with zero portages. Then skied from the 12,276' summit to 6,660' via the SW Chutes (perfect at first, then increasingly less so, and finally oddly enough -- or perhaps predictably with the low angle? -- much better) with zero portages.
Tuesday: same thing (especially since the previous day had left me a maddeningly 77' short of the half-million mark for season tally earned vertical for turns), although portaged ~20' horizontal to gain another whopping 100' vertical of skiing.
Obligatory dorky summit self-portrait:
Obligatory shameless gear promotion shot (on the very final pitch, which despite its ugliness, actually skied fine):
Wednesday at Hood, got in a lap on Palmer Snowfield > Magic Mile (to w/in ~100' vertical of the parking lot) before the lifts opened:
. . . then skinned back up the Magic Mile to the Lower Palmer to find a nice skintrack along the far skinner's left of the lift on the periphery of an isolated race lane.
Snow was not only fully lit now, but also nicely soft -- hardly a coincidence!
The third & final lap was even nicer, but I had to catch a mid-day PDX flight.
Now time to start getting ready for the 2013-14 season...Mo' skimo here: NE Rando Race Series

And now to interrupt the stoke with some anti-stoke:

Let's see, mid-40s, had at least one kid aged 3, worked in some sort of financial analysis-related field, and "His professional background shined through in his preparation: 'he was [...] a numbers and logic guy and I noticed how this translated into his preparation for the trip (meticulous gear packing).'" Sounds a lot like someone I know, plus I skied that same route four years + four days earlier...Mo' skimo here: NE Rando Race Series

Went south to the land-of-no-sales-tax last weekend and bagged my August + September turns. It was nice to ride a lift to the goods for a change:
Palmer snowfield's holding well, but it'll be a dry, uphill hike to the midstation level very soon - if you're contemplating getting your September turns in, go as soon as possible.

I was also there Friday, Sunday and Monday. I meet a bunch of people like me bagging both months on one trip.
I was a bit scared on Monday as I left the parking lot at 3:45pm and got stuck in traffic on Route 26 with a flight to take at 7:10pm. Hoping that October will be easier to bag this year without having to wait for a hurricane to hit.Ski Mad World

Muir skied fairly wonderfully yesterday. Nicely wind buffed new snow, easy skiining, minimal old snow exposed, zero ice. Clouds were rolling in from the south and had reached Pebble creek by noon when we skied down. Apparently later on in the afternoon it was snowing hard again up there. It was surprisingly quiet given the snow this week and good weather forecast maybe 12 people up there with skis and handful of climbers?
Nice to get the first day of the season done and that inevitable feeling of "how the fuck do you do this again?"

Continuous snow and skinning/skiing from/to Pebble creek.
Probably could have pushed it a little further (some had linked patches the previous day - Freebirds crew?) than that but the trail/rock stairs were just too easy walking in sneakers and I hate the smell of ptex on volcano.

Anyone wanna ski baker when this storm system (or series of) settles down? Prefer weekend but can play hooky if necessary
Very open to other options as well, it'll be interesting to see how much snow ends up and at what elevations when this is over

1. 542's closed to Artist Point for the season
2. Repairs on Glacier Creek road were scheduled to begin today, somehow I doubt that's happening
3. If the guvmint shuts down, it takes the Nat'l Parks with it
What's a powderhound to do?
