    RE: WA Snowpack

With this new, cold, snow rolling in on top of our fresh sun/wind/rain/wtf crust I have but one question:
    Are we fucked?

At least the storm looks to be starting out warm and cooling down, so hopefully we get a good bond. Problem is right now the snow is so incredibly variable on different aspects/elevations/geographies that it's going to be difficult to predict what's good and what's not.

This right here. Huge variation between N and S slopes. I was skiing nice, soft snow yesterday on slopes that never get sun. I was also skiing straight up ice on sun-affected spots. (@ baker)

Thanks to Mt Baker Ski Patrol, NWAC, REI, BCA, and all the others involved in putting this thing on, there were a lot of people getting their first avy instruction!

I won a really nice pair of snowshoes. Anyone want to buy some snowshoes?

Before the Beacon Rally, we had intended to do a quick run up to Artist Point, but the snowpack was pretty dicey with the 15+ inches of new snow, so we just skinned out a bit and dug a pit. The layer of new snow was popping with very little pressure.

My friend is really happy about her test results!

dumb question from a PNW "new guy". Does Snoqualmie frown on skinning within resort boundary? kids are in morning lessons and mom and dad don't feel like buying day passes for 3 hours of most likely meh skiing. thanks

Lots of knicker clad homemade wooly hat types skin or snowshow up the Alpie bc exit which makes for a complete crapfest. Listen to the deep wisdom of the dashman

FWIW, the white stuff falling last night at Central was super light and fluffy on top of the icy hardpack beneath. Made for a great night with my nine-year-old testing her new skis.

Unless it's a weekend. I'm unsure of any inbounds skinning routes at Snoqualmie resorts on weekends during the day.

If you don't know the area, there can be rewarding exploring to be had on the other side of the highway. Look for trip reports for 'kendall stump', which may fit your 3-hour window. Avy world will be atypical for the next week or more -- keep your brain on.

I have skinned up the blue runs at Hyak on the weekend while lifts were running, to get over to Mount Catherine. Ski patrol saw us and waved. YMMV.
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...

I suspect the nickle changers here frown on inbounds skinning more than patrol will. Hyak is the right answer, tho.

Zesty: please report back what you find. I was inbounds at Stevens last night and ducked in some relatively unskied trees to look at the snow and found a burly sun crust that was not breaking, with a lot of facets below. Im curious what the snowpack looks like over there

My skiing plans for the weekend are being pre-empted by the necessity of attending my company's "winter bash." Since I'm the new guy on the management team and also work in the field it's probably a really good idea to go get some face time with the higher ups. Given what I saw last night at Alpy, I doubt I'm going to be missing much in the BC this weekend anyway.

Provided I don't get pissed and throw up on the president's shoes I might do a short skip up to Snow Lake divide or McLellan Butte on Sunday afternoon.

I was at Yodelin last Saturday and the north face skied surprisingly well (all things considered). A nice 6" of sugary snow on top of a supportable crust. Was hoping Stevens would be reporting a bit more accum but only 2" so far today. NOAA is still calling for upwards of 4" this afternoon and tonight with another 3 possible tomorrow... We might go back to the north facing stuff if we don't get much more snow fall overnight.
