TR: Mt. Baker Turns, Sept 30, 2012
I figure I should fuel some stoke on the board...
Splitz, AngryBeard, Wiggles, CrazyHorse and I made a trip to Mt. Baker on September 30th. After a 4am departure from Vancouver, we found ourselves at the Heliotrope Ridge Parking lot at 6am, getting on the trail ahead of a few trailhead campers.
Hiking in the dark.
A few streams to cross along the way.
Finally starting to ascend heliotrope ridge and getting close to the treeline. There are some fantastic looking alpine meadows through the section.
Mt. Baker and the Roosevelt Glacier
Ascending the Coleman Glacier
Not generally being the mountaineering types, we probably brought slightly more ski than necessary. Lhasa Pows, Dynafit Stokes, K2 Hardsides and Pocket Rockets were in attendance. Splitz at least got to check out his new Karakorum bindings.
Regrettably, things didn't really come together to get to the summit. I took the lamest fall ever and managed to do something to my shoulder. I ended up spending the remainder of the day popping Ibuprofen and grimacing along... When we finally got to the Roman Wall high winds and cloud around the summit made for low visibility. Between that and concern that we'd have to navigate the Coleman Glacier in low vis we decided to abort at the Base of the Roman wall.
First time on skis since early May for all of us... Despite somewhat marginal conditions, stoke levels were high.
Wiggles ripping it up. After a few sketchy lines last year she says she'll be retiring the Pocket Rockets. Probably a good last hurrah for 'em.

A rare photo of me, thanks for the Pic AngryBeard
After getting off the glacier we were able to open up a bit. The last time I'd skiied something this chattery it was a slalom course...

NICE effort.
By middle of October there usually is enough new snow @ Helitrope to get the first real powder turns of the year...at least there was last year. Here's hoping.TGR Bureau Chief, Greenwater, WA

Thanks for the words of praise everyone. I picked up a used DSLR mainly to shoot skiing this winter so I'm hoping to step up my game for TRs. This was the second day out with the DSLR and the first time on snow, so definitely learned a thing or two.
