A LOT of fucking bullshit judging in this thread.
NWX is open often, more than Heather. The stuff off the summit to the back is more of a crapshoot and is often not in good shape for long when summit is running (south-facing).
The benefits are the lack of lines compared to meadows and the endless tree skiing when conditions are good. When conditions are marginal it's boring, since there is no variation. Meadows can still be entertaining in bad snow since it has some interesting places to explore. The problem with MHM is absorbing all the radness emanating from everyone.
The swap referenced above is a fund raiser for Lakeridge and Lake Oswego high school ski teams. Your comments still apply.
The swap supporting MHSP is here http://www.mhsss.com/.
Try the Hood River high school ski team swap. It's more of a buyers market with better quality gear. Outdoor sports gear is a leading barter currency in Hood River, so it tends to be turned over frequently and priced more appropriately than Willamette valley swaps.

Can't believe anyone would suggest driving to White Pass. One knarly run on the front, but most of the rest is flat. The new terrain is so boring I can't understand why they bothered.
Crystal is a whole different experience, no comparison in Washington and more quality lines than Whistler.
Save your vacation days for Revelstoke and Fernie, they're as good as anywhere.
^ I thought the White Pass comments were a bit suspect, but I am now interested in checking it out for lift/bc. My coveted list of preference within 4 hours of P-town w/ no regard for drive time and talking lift access is:
1. Crystal Mtn (I kinda wish it had better lodging and town nearby. It is 2X meadows in most capacities that matter)
2. Mt Hood Meadows
3. Mt Bachelor
4. Ski Bowl
Bachelor and meadows are close though and most, I think, like bachy better if drive time is inconsequential. Mt Bach can deliver and its got more size.
this is pretty much what I was thinking and in that case, I could spend a lot of time in nwx without getting bored. and I've had some great days in marginal conditions cruising groomers on outback. the combination of the terrain, longer runs and the lack of lines on nwx make it a lot easier to stay in my meditative groove.
That is a pretty good way to sum it up. I do however enjoy Bachelor when the conditions are less than optimal more than Hood\Meadows. Perhaps it's the Pine Marten lodge and a microbrew at elevation? Or maybe just the long uncrowded groomers. It could even be the fact that I enjoy most everything about Central Oregon...Admittedly I am an old fart now, and the endless low angle tree lines in the Outback\Northwest area are exactly what I want these days...I favor bachelor over hood...
I just moved to the Gorge area. Did some limited research last year to figure out the best place for a pass. I got a pass at Meadows at the early season rate of around $500, which is pretty damn cheap as far as I'm concerned. I've been up there 5 days so far since opening day (Thanksgiving).
The most crucial insight I have is:
(1) Weekends are packed. I've been told Monday-->Wednesdays is best. I had one Tuesday that confirmed this and there were NO lift lines.
(2) The conditions have been great, but I've been told that with the warm/cold cycles **you have to be on the mountain when it's snowing** to have dry snow.
I'm new to Mt Hood skiing and I'd like to meet others who are new to the area as well. Give me a shout...
