According to a colleague who lives in Germany but grew up in Romania, prost means stupid in Romanian. So he has a chuckle everytime Germans use it when clinking glasses.

Same in Bulgarian - "prost" means illiterate, lacking manners, stupid. LOL

Yeah really, when I think of 2 countries that have totally dominated Germany throughout the years, Romania and Bulgaria come first to mind…

Well, while German is a West Germanic language, the word "prost" comes from the Latin prosit. Romanian is a Eastern Romance language and one could expect that "prost" would have the same meaning as in Latin. However, in Romanian it come from Proto-Slavic prostъ‎ (прост) which means "simple"... etc.
