But, really, my question is serious. Running a ski hill is a tough business. I'm pretty damn sure that, after, what, a decade or two of solar existing as a somewhat workable source of energy, that every hill manager worth his salary has looked into energy alternatives, because it is a major expense. Why haven't they done this? It's in their interest to show a profit, right? He'll, for some eastern hills, it could mean survival, or not.

Of course, if you're a non profit, well..........
Solar (as you use the word) has existed for several decades, but the cost/value proposition has changed pretty dramatically in the past 2-3 years. Plus a lot of those hills have management that is equally hide bound.

What I really want to know is how much salary the board members of this trustafarian utopian slacker non profit are pulling down as this charade continues.

What the fuck do you do for a living, anyway?

Nope, not several decades. Maybe two. One, for feasible large scale projects.
It is cheaper, thanks to the Chinese glutting the market. The hardware, that is. Initially. But I'd still like to see the numbers compared to traditional energy sources. Oil is becoming much cheaper, and may stay there for years, and gas is super plentiful in the east. And I'd love to hear if those things can put up with a harsh northeast climate for very long before being replaced. Lord knows buildings take a severe beating up there.

Managers "hide bound"? Maybe. But ski hills are low margin businesses akin to farming. Worse, even. No government supports, like Ag. I certainly wouldn't want to run such a capital intensive business that is dependant upon the weather. No, if the cost savings were there, I'm pretty sure somebody private would have gone down that road. Hell, just for the PR greenie thing, if it broke even.

Can I cleave the difference between the use of solar power as an energy source and it's use as a mechanism of self aggrandizing twits?

Solar panels are pervasive in Yurp and there's a few around CO supporting ski related uses.

See Trombe Wall for some history on solar: "The essential idea was first explored by Edward S. Morse and patented by him in 1881.[1] In the 1960s it was fully developed as an architectural element by French engineer Félix Trombe and architect Jacques Michel".

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trombe_wall .

    Also: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...n-ski-resorts/

So consider making the distinction between a good idea and some egomanial blohard using somebody elses work to further their image.

Did you see solar arrays thirty years ago anywhere?

And energy is much much more expensive in yurp, and governments support alternatives much much more.

Hey, sure, Taos, good place for it. Lots of sun, mild climate. Argument here is about the feasibility of dark and dreary Maine.

Gee a minute ago it was about the existence of solar 30 years ago. Must be me.

Anyway, make the distinction or don't and just go thrash like the rest of the idiots.

If everyone reduced their thinking to money, we'd never get anywhere and would end up like a bunch of cranky old fucks arguing over meaningless shit on the internet and that would really be stupid.

Anyway, you can't own your thrashings...fine.
Solar has been around, it's an investment that may or may not pay off and neither you nor any so called expert on the subject will trump time.
