I forget what dealership he is a part of but he had a real nice deal on a ride for me. I decided to keep my cars and then run them into the ground. I have three kids and the cars get beat on pretty good. You would be surprised at what you find in between the seats and mashed in the carpet.

Hrmmm... Sport trim with Nav were on a waiting list around here when we looked a year ago. We could have ordered one but that cut into our haggling ability a ton. They wanted $52k taxed and tagged. We ended up getting a 1yo certified pre-owned Acura MDX for $10K less.

Mine's an '08, and the V8, but I love my Touareg. My only wish was that I got the TDI instead, with gas mileage being pretty terrible on the V8. If I was you, I'd buy used (like a demo or lease return) so that you get the balance of factory warranty AND CPO/extended. That, or spend the $$$ up front for the extended warranty. You don't want one of these out of warranty - the service and repair costs are just too much. That said, I've not had any issues with mine (fortunately). There are some horror stories, but I think you'll find that with nearly any car.
Fits all my gear and all my family with out issue. It's a fun car to boot.

I've never driven either car, but what about a Toyota Highlander Hybrid?

I'd get a volvo for the family safety factor alone. The new IIHS offset frontal crash test produced some scary results for cars many considered very safe--except for volvo and acura. Volvo's always gone above and beyond on safety, I think it might be the wife's next car. Comfy seats too.
Too bad volvo doesn't bring their diesel over here, that'd be ideal.

Oh, I wasn't trying to endorse the Toureg, Cayenne or Q7 as a good family car (although I happen to think all 3 are). I did lease a cayenne turbo for a year back in 04-05 B.C. (bc = before child) and the thing was a fucking blast. Only put like 13k on the thing and they made me replace the tires before turning it in
I just happen to know a lot about the brakes because I run a set on my allroad. They come in two variants (one to fit under the 17" rims and the others under 18+) that either clamp onto a 330mm or 350mm rotor. 2 pairs of front pads can be had for ~$100 - hawk hps are good, cheap and leave very little brake dust. oe pagid's are great, not as cheap, and your front rims turn black the first time you hit the brakes. I happen to run some stupidly expensive 3 piece rotors under them, but for their original application, rotors can be sourced from centric (or a host of other brake part makers) for ~$150. $250 in parts to do a brake job on a true 6 piston caliper t'ain't bad 'tall, if ya ask me.Last edited by jgb@etree; 08-17-2012 at 05:20 AM.

I have a 2010 tdi Touareg. I like it a lot.
Maintenance-wise, we had a problem with the back-up sensor failing. The dealer didn't have the right part in stock, then ordered the wrong one. That cost me three trips to Idaho Falls. Dealing with the ad blue reservoir is a pain because I haven't figured out how to fill it myself. If you have a dealer nearby it won't be an issue.
Rear seat comfort is good. Cargo capacity is pretty weak, even with the seats folded. That was probably my biggest disappointment with the car. My bad for not measuring some of my stuff beforehand.
I get around 26-28 mpg driving around Jackson Hole, which is a combination of rural highway and mildly urban stop-and-go. On the highway I'm usually closer to 30 mpg.
Haven't had to do anything with the brakes yet, at ~30k miles

My old man has the V10 TDI, 2007 I think. Very nice car and fully loaded, but man has it been a dog on the electronics repair front especially the first 3 yrs when it was brand new. With the price of diesel soaring above gas maybe less of an advantage as I think he gets closer to 18-20 mpg.
My wife drives the Volvo XC90 R and it's also a very nice car but gets horrible gas mileage, average ~16 combined city/highway. I cringe every time I fill it up.Move upside and let the man go through...

I don't have twins, but my friends with 2 kids have told me that a third row is necessary if you're ever gonna carpool or ride with other adults. Which has led me to the honda pilot or highlander.

Toyota reliability is unmatched in this market...
Go for a hylander hybrid. New model years are much bigger than old - with plenty of room for 4.
