Book Description
Publication Date: April 26, 2012 | Series: 33 1/3

It's the summer of 1979. A fifteen-year-old boy listens to WNEW on the radio in his bedroom in Brooklyn. A monotone voice (it's the singer's) announces into dead air in between songs "The Talking Heads have a new album, it's called Fear of Music" - and everything spins outward from that one moment.

Jonathan Lethem treats Fear of Music (the third album by the Talking Heads, and the first produced by Brian Eno) as a masterpiece - edgy, paranoid, funky, addictive, rhythmic, repetitive, spooky and fun. He scratches obsessively at the album's songs, guitars, rhythms, lyrics, packaging, downtown origins, and legacy, showing how Fear of Music hints at the directions (positive and negative) the band would take in the future. Lethem transports us again to the New York City of another time - tackling one of his great adolescent obsessions and illuminating the ways in which we fall in and out of love with works of art.

>

Thin White Rope, "The One That Got Away", their last live concert, a double disk of barely controlled gritty bluesy double-lead- guitar feedback squalls that just builds and builds. Heavy, light, moody, abrasive, delicate and sooooo damn good.
For you Mezzanine fans (great choice, by the way), get Laika's "Sounds of the Satellites" - not as emotional, but just as good in a different way...

almost made me rethink my choice....that album is almost perfect, pinkerton is up there too, so underrated. But I have to right a serious wrong in this thread, 4 pages and no Zeppelin?? Weak! I grew up in a pretty religious household, but for some reason my Dad had Led Zeppelin 4 on vinyl, and to this day I think its my number 1.

I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

I regret to inform you that if smashing pumpkins was your favorite album of college you're almost surely older than me. I think I was in 8th grade when that came out.

Recently, the record for longest running streak for a CD to go unchanged in my car CD player has been broken (previously held by the combination of Rush's Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures since they both fit on one disc) by the combination of Porcupine Tree's Nil Recurring EP and the album Fear of a Blank Planet. They both fit on one disc and share some of the same themes (and some songs have similar lyrics) so they play really well together. I cannot get enough of these albums.
All I know is that I don't know nothin'... and that's fine.
