Leroy sez: Any time someone who is grieving says anything remotely like "we need to make sure this can never ever happen again' they should be treated with empathy but otherwise completely ignored. Their suggestions should be viewed as a step in their grieving process but given no weight or credibility whatsoever.
.
Also, I get that it is tragic for the parents, but not every time someone dies is it a tragedy. It's life.
blessings to the parents and other loved ones and friends.
p.s. beware the uphill sidestep!!!!!

Since it is not about the money, should CAIC expect a donation of $250,000 minus 40% lawyer fees if there is a conclusion in favor of the plaintiff of this case?

or better yet, human common sense and accountability education.
avi edu is great but oftentimes just brings folks closer to their eventual doom in the mountains.
such is life.

Looks like Vail could be taking it in the pants on this one. Maybe a bad precedent but sounds like Vail missed it's opportunity to work with the family. Need to finish reading the article...

Ski areas all over the west are breathing a sigh of relief.
I have already seen a lot of change in the way we operate and in a large part it is due to the WP fatality and this one.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Legalese on the signs? Sure but I am not 100% certain of the verbiage so don't hold me to it whether or not the word mitigation is used on those signs. I am fluent enough to understand the difference as are you. Not everyone is.
What I find striking is that this warning appears at the bottoms of most chairlifts now. In the past moving snow didn't happen on open terrain.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

It doesn't matter if the GP gets the verbiage or not really, it's about how it will play out in court during a lawsuit hearing. If a ski area calls it control a lawyer could definitely make a case for that being misleading to the public as in there was no risk of slides at all.
I noticed this shift in the verbiage about 15 or so years ago after there were a bunch of inbounds, fatal slides after "control" work.dirtbag, not a dentist

I'm sure the gopro footage helped make it clear the kids hiked up into a closed and super fucking dangerous spot on their own. Sucks for everyone, but that crew of kids, their parents, and more or less everyone who regularly skis prima has a renewed respect for that area. Blaming ski patrol was unnecessary.

Where I work? No.
But we are not your typical ski area, the former GM was the SS Dir and Patrol Dir b4 he became GM. He still does A/C every day and is hell to try and keep up with.
New GM has been there a while and the area has rowdy terrain but a conservative approach to terrain opening.
Maybe but the 2 areas I have most recently seen these signs do not allow uphill travel during the operational season.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Bingo!!!
I have work at and done A/C at 5 ski resorts/areas in the west.
They were all different. BB is very different and at the risk of sounding like I drank the Kool-aide it is the model for what a lot of ski areas in America could be.
No RE, no hotels, not a ski resort, a ski area.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Was just out mowing the lawn when it occurred to me yet another difference.
The requirement to have a Transciever to access large portions of the mountain.
I am not aware of anyplace else with that has so much terrain where access depends on the user to acknowledge that yes, avalanches may occur and I agree to wear an Avalanche Transciever. This has been the policy for a damn long time.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.
