    Perfect Albums

There was a nomination for Look Sharp by Joe jackson, I can't dsagree.

I'll throw out Special Beat Service (English Beat), Walking on Sunshine, Eddie Grant, My aim is True Elvis Costello ( the only Elvis album I really like, too), and then we get into the Beatles and Stones and shit, instead post something newer and enlighten me.

It's not like I don't listen to new music all the damn time (I do), it's just i don't hear perfection. Special Beat Service is prob my favorite album ever, dog me if you will.

Yeah that's newer. The song Layla is awesome, the album, to me, not so much.
Although...Duane's on it, that alone atones for a multitude of sins.

the album from start to finish is guts on the floor raw and as good as it gets if you've suffered through that kind of experience. the first time i listened to it was after coming home from a dead show in s.f. and i read the liner notes as i listened and was just blown away. i'd heard layla on the radio and never particularly cared about it, but in the context of the album and the story i had a new respect for it and clapton.

when i realized there was still another song after layla i could not imagine what would be appropriate to follow the buildup to and crash in layla. but the last song is the perfect end to a perfect album about love and broken hearts and self-destruction. but i was basically living the album at the time, right down to my best friend's girl so it hit home hard.

    edit: i didn't see "newer."

Surrealistic Pillow, Jefferson Airplane, and Loveless, My Bloody Valentine come to mind without putting a lot of thought into it.

Then there's Pleased To Meet Me by the Replacements, and Kind of Blue by Miles Davis.

"Perfect" might be a stretch, but I'll throw these out to mix it up a bit...

*I Wish My Brother George Was Here - Del The Funky Homosapien

    *The Chronic - Dr. Dre

*Bizarre Ride II - The Pharcyde

I'm not a huge hip-hop/rap fan but these albums looped in my cassette deck for days on end.

I also really loved a few NOFX albums like Ribbed and S & M airlines, Against the Grain by Bad Religion, and of course Paul's by the Beastie Boys. I also agree with several of the others listed above, but they're already mentioned...

New albums are tough because I don't listen to music like I used to. (Digital music might be to blame???) There's always a playlist of sorts and the entire album doesn't always make it. The latest Black Keys and Girl Talk's All Day would be exceptions however...
    I can't remember...

A couple more - newer - worthy ones IMO: Mule Variations by Tom Waits, and The '59 Sound by the Gaslight Anthem.

Tom Waits new(er) album - bad ass me
    Home Again - Doughboys ('91)
    Rancid - Let's Go
+ for pixies SR and Jane's... gonna have to include nevermind in that

I'm gonna have to dig out some albums and listen through em... the itunes shuffle has really put a end to throwing an album on and letting it run.
I know there were a couple Slackers albums that were great start to finish one was the Slackers and Friends.

The Sadies Darker Circles is good.

    The Smalls - The Smalls

Within the last year or so, Girls' Father, Son, Holy Ghost and Big Boi's Sir Lucious Left Foot. Great songs, wide ranging but all of a piece. Although my first thought on seeing the thread title was My Aim Is True.

I also go back to Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend every few years, mostly because Robert Quine plays such badass guitar on it.

I know it's cliche', but DSOTM is the perfect album, in my view.

When I used the term for joe jackson's album, I meant that for what it was, it's style, every song fits, every song is great, it's just perfect. Not just a "great" album.

My aim is true kind of fits.

Kind if blue is the greatest album ever recorded, so it fits too.

Yeah that's what I was going for with my picks too. Another one, pretty overdone by now though is Boston - that album was really of a piece. With Special Beat Service there's literally nothing you could change to make it better, it really is perfect.

Alanis? Really? Honestly I've never listened to the whole album so I guess I have no idea but that wasn't on my radar at all.

I haven't heard any newer albums that I really thought "worked" as an entire album. Then again, what are we considering "newer?" This may also have to do with my tastes, it's entirely possible that there are albums that as a whole are "perfect" but they're not in a genre I listen to.

Seems to me, most of the albums that come to mind are from the '70s, with a couple from the '80s. There are some newer electronic artists that have produced albums where I loved the majority of it but then one or two tracks would go off the rails and prevent the album from falling into that "perfect" category. More recently I'm finding that I'll absolutely love one or a few tracks off an album and not like the rest at all.

A few that I'd nominate that haven't been named yet:

    Rush - Hemispheres
    The Who - Quadrophenia
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
    Metallica - Kill 'em All
    Nirvana - Bleach
    Breakestra - Hit the Floor
Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressable
...Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain...

"I enjoy skinny skiing, bullfights on acid..." - Lacy Underalls

The problems we face will not be solved by the minds that created them.

    Good definition.
Not incredibly new, but not "classic rock" either:
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
    Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies

They don't make my list, but I'm surprised no one said Radiohead (most likely OK Computer) yet.

Also, it's not something I listen to everyday, but you could make a case for the first Van Halen album.
We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.
