    I think part of it is that the volcano is 10-15,000 feet above the ocean floor so the landslide could have a lot of vertical motion.

    Also the landslide blog is fucking great, where else would I come across things like this? Click image for larger version.

    On the other hand, today I learned that there's evidence of two separate cosmic impacts on settlements in the middle east, possibly the root of the Sodom and Gomorrah story. So maybe a giant tsunami is a real risk?

    A much smaller scale than the canary in the ocean story - but isn’t there a threat (theoretically) of a massive slide on the Big island leading to widespread tsunamis on every Hawaiian island

    The mega tsunami in glacier bay area of SE Alaska was pretty massive

    But that's the opposite of a tsunami crossing the Atlantic to the east coast, very constrained by the boundaries of the water so there's nowhere for it to spread out.
