I always base my Alcohol purchases on whether or not the parent company throws their weight around in their trade associations.
Oh wait - everybody does that.

My point is whats the point of getting so worked up about what some sales rep or regional manager or whoever did at some awards ceremony. All conglomerates, like all businesses, are after the bottom line. I like a lot of those Diageo products, even if you think Dom is the hicks lottery gift. Does Dom or Vueve or Moet or Perrier Joet or any of these other champagnes suck because they aren't family business anymore?

You don't care... we get that. I like kicking marketing twats in the nuts.
err, yes, the "bottom line" mentality that the current big conglomerates bring is what makes the product suck. My favorite Champagne is still from a small house - Deutz, owned by Roederer family (or last I checked). Unfortunately the conglomerates with both their pricing, distribution and advertising power make it difficult to acquire these days.

i have never, ever bought cognac from a major manufacturer (but plenty from small VSOP labels who are, in reality, XOs that didn't have enough money to purchase the designation). nor do i buy french wine that's not "mis en bouteille à la propriété". one has to be persistent in their snobbery.
