FWIW, I don't think I can say the iphone cameras are *bad*

But I personally prefer the color profile from the Pixel. I was able to tweak the iphone settings a bit and get something tolerable, but I still prefer the photos my pixel 1 and 3 took in terms of overall "look"

And I think that the iphone just murders fine detail. Not really an issue if you're never zooming in on your photos/cropping/printing large, but I just hate the way their sharpening algorithms work. Maybe that means I'd be happier with an iphone Pro shooting RAW, but I've found myself unhappy with the non-pro in many conditions.

Here's a 100% crop from a shot...look at what it did to the foliage in the lower right. Looks like you applied some sort of "painting" filter to the image.

Look at a thematically similar crop from my Pixel 3:

All the fine detail just looks so much more natural to me.

Again, I'm not going to say I haven't taken lots of nice photos with my iphone, but the Pixel software/processing felt better to me (and based on reviews I have seen, continues to be that way).

As for the Apple ecosystem...I hardly feel like I have joined it (again, other than the watch). Yes, I am using imessage/airdrop, but other than photo quality, imessage is seamless when talking to android users (and I'm not a teenaged girl, so I don't get upset about what color your chat bubble is). App availability is pretty similar these days and I don't really use any paid apps. I still use Google Maps, I use the gmail app with gmail (and my contacts synced from my google account), my photos get backed up into Google Photos rather than the apple cloud...Never touched any sort of itunes/apple music, never signed up for any apple services, etc.

Oh, and I still haven't found a suitable GPS app for the iphone. Not a navigation or tracking app, but something that turns it into an equivalent of a handheld garmin unit. Waypoints (especially waypoints with auto-advance within X distance), a dashboard with stats like heading/bearing/course/speed over ground/VMG, etc.

On Android I used GPS Essentials which was kind of a janky app, but delivered all those features.

Took a while to get dashboards set up and waypoints/courses loaded in their awkward interface, but once I did it it worked like a handheld Garmin.

I think Locus is available for iPhone now. It's super full featured.

I love my iPhone 5se. Does everything a “phone” should do. Phone, text, map and email. That’s it. I have a computer at home. To do Docusign or other important shit if needed.
Really helps me from starring at my phone all day because I have no apps. And I am not turning into one of the zombies I see at every restaurant or social gatherings. And next time you are at a stop light, look and see how many people are starring at their phones. What a world we have created, and now all this is acceptable behavior…

    What phone now?

I’m impressed. I thought I was in old styl hold out record territory when I finally gave up my 6 last year. Kudos for keeping the 5 alive!

Haha. Work gave me an iPhone 6 after I lost my pixel2 a few years back. I'd had a 5 before the pixel. Never had much trouble switching aside from contacts not syncing well.

The iPhone version has less features than the Android version. It's a work in progress. https://www.locusmap.app/ios/

Now that I've had the Pixel 8 Pro for a while I can't say it's leaps and bounds better than the 6 was but it is better. It still has the problem Pixels have had since the beginning, if you do a lot of stuff, use graphic intensive apps or websites, and use FB a bunch the thing needs to be restarted too frequently. All of a sudden you go to do something and it doesn't happen (right) so a quick restart and all is well. It can be frustrating but it does so many other things really well that I can look past that. I don't know if it would be better with a Qualcomm chip rather than their house brand Tensor.

I took a look and it seems like a good tool but doesn't seem able to do what I want. More focused on maps/trails/tracks.

For context, the kind of use I am looking for is something like racing sailboats or the kind of functions you would use for orienteering on an old school GPS before everything had color + maps + touchscreens.

I don't need maps (they are just blue water anyways and I'm not navigating open water so I don't need nautical charts). I just need to be able to drop pins via lat/lon (or literally going up to a mark and clicking a button to say "right here"). Then I want it to be able to tell me straight-line bearing to that point, current heading from my motion, and possibly course from prior point. When I get to that point, jump to the next point in the series.

Plus other dashboard metrics: speed over ground, VMG, distance to point, time, elapsed time, etc. as needed.

The kind of stuff you can do on a 30 year old garmin handheld but I can't seem to find an iOS app for:

Seems so basic (the android app is literally "GPS Essentials") but doesn't seem to exist. You can get a bag of some of the features in various activity-specific apps, but nothing that just replicates the most basic features of a GPS.

There is now a 3rd party message package that would make it look like you are on an Apple. It does not have the color showing that you are not on an Apple phone (maybe Spike??). But it has been a while since I read something had been released on the Play Store. I was going to install it and try it just to see what it was like, but it needs an iCloud account and I did not want to sign up for one just for that reason. The other thing other than the color of the text message is the support of RCS (Rich Communication Services)- end to end encryption like WhatsApp has and some things like a group chat are helpful in a few things.

The whole conversation is so weird to me. I can’t imagine the freedom all you android folk are enjoying, so I can scarce miss it. All of that is overblown. Choice is good. Options are great. I think that’s probably enough without turning it into some sort of tribal thing?

I still roll with a p6 pro. I have not had these issues. It's been a fabulous phone. Still does everything I ask of it fast as can be. I just wish it was a bit smaller.

just paid $1400 all in for the iphone 16pro 256gig with the applecare plus for two years. Absolute idiotic move but I wanted the satellite (currently on 13 normal), and I should get a solid 3 years out of this thing. Had the applecare pay for a back and two screens on my last phone so figure it's worth it.

obviously could have gotten satellite on a lesser model but i'm keeping this thing for awhile.

my 13 128gb with a 96% (I think) battery and a new screen as of 6 months ago is for sale if anyone wants it.

Same, though I went with the 512. I get two years out of mine usually and toss the leftover at kids.

As to idiotic…. In addition to being my camera I look at this thing a pathetic number of hours each week. I don’t have too hard a time rationalizing it.

what carrier do you have? shoulda looked at trading in your 13

I had an iPhone X or XS (can't remember) that didnt work at all and traded it in for a 14pro for the same monthly fee and a one time "pay today" of $40

these cell phone carriers want you to get into a new phone and will give out deals when new phones come out. sometimes you have to "barter" with them to get the best deal though

How long before a further price drop on a 15? The base 16 pre-order is $799. The base 15 is $699. Android is a non-starter for my wife. We can get up to $180 for her 12 in good condition. Holds a charge, but not as long as it used to.

visible. I buy my phones unlocked outright. I pay $35 a month which includes my watch.

Apple offered $250 trade in and I know I can get more online/fb marketplace/ksl but also more hassle....

I had to hassle w Verizon to get the deal I did.. but I had a friend who worked at Verizon who said if you hassle with them they'll give you the best deal possible.

if I can get a similar deal ill upgrade to the 16 just for slightly better camera, titanium, universal charger, etc.

Gazelle was a great website for used unlocked phone deals that last time I upgraded. Couldn’t take the headache and bullshit of dealing with cell reps bs.

I’ve been with Verizon since 1997. I upgrade every two years and pay $11.33/month on an iPhone Pro Max. My wife’s IPhone Pro is 8.xx/month. No hassle needed at this point. With my 14 pro max currently I have zero need to upgrade though. Besides finally getting rid of the lightning interface. That can wait.

Usually can make more money if the phone is in good condition and working to sell it yourself on FB, Ebay (if wanting to ship it and bigger market than local) or Swappa type of web sites. The trade in is just some lower number than the actual value that they are going for. Unless the trade is some super great promotional deal, maximize the payout and sell it on your own unless you do not want to deal with a listing and dealing with inquiries.

AT&T is doing $1000 trade value for any recent iPhone which is well above market value for my 13 mini (especially with broken charge port), so I’m in for a 16 Pro preorder.

You have to deal with the BS of them splitting the credit over 36 months, but it’s a better deal than anything you could sell it for.

Looking forwards to ditching lightning cables forever.
