Thanks, Mike, that's helpful. Tweaked my shoulder climbing out of Underwood Thursday. May be next week before I get up there. The last frozen shoulder PT has motivated me to be nicer to my shoulder.

Skied some lines east of the pass thursday and friday. No-name looked dirty and trenched. Found some cleaner shots by hiking in. The snow was punchy, solid until you break through and then sink up to your knees. Even when conditions aren't ideal it's a beautiful place to be skiing in May.

Not that anybody cares, but I finally made my second trip over Sonora Pass. The first time was in 1978 in a Fiat 128, and could barely get over the pass with all my camping and climbing gear (east to west.) I did it the second time recently (also east to west) on my Honda AT. I can't believe it took me 43 years between trips since it is such a spectacular pass. I have probably been over Tioga 100 times.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

My first attempt was east to west in a Uhaul towing a car. Had no idea what I was getting into coming from New England. Blew the transmission not to far up the hill and had to take the car off the trailer. Was able to turn around the truck and drive it down hill and some locals set up a tow behind their jeep to get my car down (which had blew a piston in South Dakota).

Ah, to be in my twenties again. Dumb luck and dumb bad luck.

Took me at least five years to try again west to east on my way to Zion and Santa Fe.

    common stories

there’s an old decommissioned U-Haul truck that’s been sitting eastbound on the side of the road just below Deadman for the last couple weeks - Owen and I saw it yesterday on our way to Mammoth

    Owen was laughing…. “the hood’s down now….”

It's a fun road on a motorcycle, but would be a nightmare pulling a trailer.

I can't think of a steeper, moderately major road. Any other similar roads out there? I can't think of anything in the West, but I have only been over a few CO passes.

You should ride over Ebbetts pass. You can loop it with Sonora pass and make a nice tour. I’ve only been on it a dozen times or so but have seen 2 jack-knifed trucks around the hairpin turns.

    Sonora Pass

yeah and it’s a lane and a half wide without a yellow stripe for much of it

    and

you’ve got both Ebbetts Pass proper (8730’) and Pacific Grade Summit (8051’) to go up and down and up and down

Reno and Sac NWS offices both forecast for Sonora Pass but they differ a bit and I always look at both

    Sonora and Ebbet's passes re-opened today https://www.mymotherlode.com/news/lo...es-reopen.html

Should make it easier to get to Mammoth at least. Leavitt Lake Snotel is reading 24" on the ground today (not sure how accurate)
