November Update
November and Psyched (4:57)
- skis (speedboards) will be 155cm -- around 170mm tip, 68mm waist, 150mm tail, waist 7cm forward of midline. Reverse camber, handmade wood ski. I want to drop into my carves when I hit terminal velocity. Not sure how these would be in park and powder.
- polecam is a very high quality black carbon-fiber pole extendable to around 170cm with an extra long cork grip (not as cold as plastic) and good for two hands. Up to 2 ball-socket camera mounts opposing each other at the top end. With two cameras it's good for framing oneself and behind (or in front of) oneself simulataneously. Retracted, it could stick out of a backpack or with the camera mount removed it could be locked up with a cable lock. It shouldn't be a big deal to carry, and I'd prefer to carry it than a backpack with it inside.
- I think most pov polecam is poor due to camera placed above pole, thus the lower part of the body is obstructed in the frame by the shaft - this polecam can avoid it. Also, many polecams are not streamlined, are too short or too heavy. Polecams can be difficult to use when maxing out, but this one should make it easier as it is light, and easy to hold with two hands or rest on the shoulder. It also has a safety ball that can be placed on the end of the handle to absorb shock should one hit it in a fall. The idea is to let go of it in a fall anyhow and it doesn't have a wrist strap.
- polecam video should be up in around 2 weeks. Skis about 6 weeks. Actual skiing: end of January, early February.
- last winter I found the polecam really useful for filming park jumps by standing off to the side of a jump and placing the handle on the snow and using it as a monopod. With dual camera mounts, I'd like to place it beneath the lip with one camera pointed to the sky and the other pointed at the landing. Also, leaving it standing beneath the lip or at the side of a jump means the filmer can go elsewhere for additional angles and cams. The pole could also stand unmanned at the edge of the pipe, one pointing to the sky, the other down the pipe. I've found it's best to dig a small hole and bury the handle so it remains rock solid if unmanned.
- In fast turns I found my gloves falling off due to them not gripping a pole. I've got some elbow straps now so they can stay attached to my body. How do snowboarders get around this problem?
key vids:
- (30s) - really liked the rearview shots of the other skier while fanging down the chute
- (1:49) - 1000 FPS in the park (first shot from top of the jump)
- (3:31) - Soul Driven: long-board skateboarding to James Brown with a polecam
- (2:50) (2:11) (2:10) http://youtu.be/fKwZU2ypkEA (2:39) http://youtu.be/TC8wCrE1EL4 (3:05) - Radiocontrolled multicopters: big area of future mountain sports photography. But can they withstand the cold and be fast enough? Aerial chase cam from a drone would be awesome.
- (4:03) - nice pov skiing shots - with a polecam the camera would've been further away from the body and it wouldn't have picked all the bumps and vibrations if the arm and shoulders stays relaxed.Last edited by adria33; 12-01-2012 at 11:00 AM. Reason: reupload

I don't really know what to add at this point. I primarily just wanted to get that video up as it is something I've had in the back of my mind for a long time and is meant to have broad appeal.
I'm trying to work out what'll be more of a game-changer: the skis or the polecam. But if you can handle both, then you're in for a ride that goes well beyond the ski run.http://heartcarve.com -- session progression

Polecam = game changer. Yes, I would go with that one alright.

Have any ski film makers started using radio controlled multicopters?

Sherpas, TGR, MSP.
When a helicopter is impossible to get/to use due to a budget or location they are used.

2012: A Carving Transformation (1:39)
I am expecting to release 2 products formally this week relating to the polecam.
The first product is an addon pack for any existing pole with a tapered end, in particular, one with a Leki compatible tip. That tip is removed prior to installation.
The HC tip is pressed onto the end of the pole and bonded with a water and cold resistant sealant which I can supply. This bonding does not produce the main component of connective strenth, the friction does, so theoretically this adhesion is optional.
(a cable lock can be placed through the red piece after taking off the black circular adapter)
The tip comes with a camera thread (the black circular adapter) or there is the option to use 1 or 2 ball heads (opposing each other) which I can supply, and the safety ball.
I use the Gossamer Gear LT4S in my setup (they said they are low on stock until the winter is over) but any Carbon Fiber pole would be ideal. The 3-section could be a good choice as it has an extended handle, and can fit in a pack. I haven't tested the HC tip as a substitute for the Black Diamond designed tips but it shouldn't be a problem (any tapered tip should be fine.)
If the handle of your pole has a camera thread (such as the GG LTS4,) you can place the monopod basket on it or the safety ball (or another ball head.)
Important:
I am also launching a second product that comprises of a complete pole made from separate high quality 30cm carbon rods, with each coupled together by a high quality aluminium thread so it can be disassembled and placed in one's backpack when not in use. It will have an extra long cork handle (as seen here):
and it will also have a threaded insert in the handle for safety ball, additional cameras or monopod basket. I am particularly looking forward to this pole and it shouldn't be expensive. It should be very slick, light, aerodynamic, strong and not too expensive. It will also have the option for a single Gopro tip that is vibration dampened.
Product pages, pics and prices should be on my site hopefully by the end of the week.Last edited by adria33; 12-01-2012 at 06:51 PM. Reason: vid reupload

Thank god it's aerodynamic, I was afraid the excessive drag would prevent me from achieving terminal velocity.

Yeah, I learned that some carbon fiber poles are actually more aerodynamic than others!
I like your user handle. Perhaps you're a heartcarver and you don't even know it. The speedboards (or are they boardskis?) are currently under construction... need to have something to film. Things are changing.http://heartcarve.com -- session progression

Oh I know it. I learned to carve switch on a pair of Head Liners many years ago.
Started using the "handle" in '96 when I got my 1st online account because I usually ski a snowboard.embrace the gape

OK. What are you on now? What ski precisely was that?
But take any ski out of its comfort zone and carving becomes sliding. That's when I need to heartslide, and within the slide I can throw in a bit of carve at the apex of the turn. I found that very hard to do on my SL sidecut skis. They just don't have the beef.http://heartcarve.com -- session progression

Beef shmeef, the Heads are 94cm, 130 tip and 95 waist. they're designed for carve training rather than tricks and if you don't keep your weight centered with equal pressure at "terminal velocity" you'll eat groom (never use'em pow).
Only bust'em out once in a blue moon when the off piste is crap and I need a change of pace from real carving on the race board.embrace the gape
