School me re Motorolo Talk About radios

I need to get a pair for an Alaska trip coming up............these don't seem to be very expensive, but what do I need to know about the details? I want simple, reliable, longer distance, not lots of bells and whistles stuff, easy to charge or batteries? I don't know what to ask about...............thanks, Chet

GMRS versions will get you up to about 1.7 watts for some brands, FRS channels are limited to 0.5 watts. They pretty much all have a max range of one to two miles in open terrain, pay no attention to the advertised range of 18 or 36 miles. (Some even say "5 watts of power", but if you read the fine print they're referring to the power to the speaker.)

Some Garmin models have a full 5 watts of legitimate transmitting power allowed by the FCC, but they're several hundred dollars and can't be used anywhere near Canada (2 watts max).
