    I'd like to take a shot at being a developer. I tried learning Java last year and really enjoyed it while I did it. Didn't know about SQL development, going to check it out.

    Business intelligence/ DBA, ect seems about in high demand as nurses, doctors. i.e almost anywhere you go you are guaranteed a job. Committing to any non-open source programming can be seen as risky.. but look what happened when Oracle bought Sun. Oracle could have just as easily buried MySQL rather then improve upon it. I'm sure MySQL developers were shitting their pants in 2009 when that was going down. Point being-- just because you pledge 'open source only' doesn't mean you are safe.

    That being said I don't work directly in the industry.
