Ongoing Kid Stoke [2011 and on...]

Killer weekend with the 8 yo. Yesterday I ran into him and the rest of his club making the Devils Castle hike for freshies, and today I did my best to keep up with him. Skiing with kids has turned into my favorite ski days.

My kid's skiing has been all over the place this year. She's been really tentative racing, she does the half wedge turn on steeper terrain, it's been kind of a step back most days. Yesterday at steamboat was one of those days, until we met up with some friends and their kids, and then she decided she could rip again. Blasting through Closets with 7 kids ages 9-12 was a trip!

If anyone has any advice as to how I can keep her skiing like that, and not the tentative half wedge skier on a slightly steep blue run, I'm all ears.

Kids react well with other kids. Get into a group, and a routine.

Agree to get her with some good friends that rip and let er rip.

Logan is having a great season, though not as good as last year racing. He’s the youngest in his age group but has a 4th and a crash out. This weekends races were cancelled due to snow. His free skiing has gone to another level this year and when he’s wirh a bunch of his buddies who rip, they all kick it up another notch.

It ain't easy to get her more free skiing time, given the commitment of racing. And her racing program is still probably 2/3 free skiing ("directed" free skiing with a coach and other U10s). But I'll try!

Keep her away from the lodge lizards. That is the hard part for us. Some of these racer groms want to go inside all the time. I have none of it. Frustrates me to no end because (especially on race day) they don't get enough reps just during race practice. I say no friends on a ski day, unless they want to ski, but I try to strike a balance because in the end skiing is all about having fun and it was that freedom to be me and go where I wanted to go on the slope when I was a kid that hooked me in. Just try to be dad coach who encourages skiing and references non skiing behaviors as potentially negative.

A couple from this weekends race. In true JR TGR maggot fashion my girl is ripping the steeps hard but having a little trouble getting the confidence to point the sticks down the hill on the flats. Top tens in every race in U12 this year but have to work on keeping her off those edges on the flats to get her into the top 3 in her bump up U12 division.

Kinda going through that with my kid who is first year U12. He's super tentative in the slalom races and can't seem to set an edge. And in the GS he just slayed it.

I think a big part of it is that he's worried about falling in the slalom, so he's taking it easy. Which means he can't get the skis to bite into the ice. Seems like it's a big positive feedback loop. We've talked about how he shouldn't worry about crashing because it's ok if he does.

Back to kid stoke. This guy just loves skiing. He's really enjoying racing, but powder is where his heart's at.

Been cruising g around Mammoth the past three days. Been a month without snow. Stoked my kid said he wanted to do something like Dave’s this afternoon. Put in two laps of steep smooth wind form buff. He killed it.
