Pic from our Mt. Edith hike today, showing some of those Big Belt backcountry bowls in the background. Maybe a maggot trip to the yurt next winter should be considered. Anybody been there and skied this stuff? Looks pretty cool. Need sleds though to get up the road.

Solid work, all around, Gentlemen and ladies.

USDAtele, you must have eaten all the gnar bars for that one!

Hit the Goosenut today for the first time, and fairly fucked up my bike, having to walk it out of the bush a ways.

Good times with Mr. and Mrs. Nest!

I stayed there the first year they opened (2 winters ago) and I loved it! there is some big boy terrain up there in the bowls if you want it. and it is the nicest yurt, but its not really a yurt, its a long hut? idk but it is nice! we used one sled and and towed two people up the road (3 total) too bad it was crap snow and icy when I was there- good views though. looking forward to going back.

Anyone else notice the bright green streak down the bottom of the Gallatin all the way to MM 54?

I haven't been upstream in a while but a friend who floated from Doe Creek mentioned how slimy the rocks and bottom were.

Too many septic systems for the area to handle?
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

The Gallatin between Cinnamon Creek and the West Fork today and the water looked "normal" no bright green streaks, but I didn't do any wading.

Yes there are too many septic systems and worse to much untreated run off from all those heavily fertilized golf courses and lawns. Carp fishing in the Gallatin would be a shame.

Getting off work at 3:30 instead of 5:30 has been one positive out of the pandemic. Easier to get some after work action in.
Wonder if anybody has ever leaned their bike against this tree for a photo?

Did Goose up to Chestnut ridge and then back down to avoid shuttle/pedaling Trail Creek. Whiteroom Guardian may be on to something as the downhill was pretty fun.

    skiing here is the worst

Seriously though, compared to a lot of other places Montana is:

    Colder
Less tourists/more local scene - especially at BB, BS is on the tourist's map now
Backcountry is much less crowded by virtue of more difficult access/longer approaches
Resorts are a bit more rustic/down to Earth

Big Sky will probably feel like a lot of other resorts you've been to, Bridger is a pretty unique and special place.

There’s about a million less people?

And most native Montanans don’t ski or climb on the weekends. They ride dirt bikes, keep horses, and shoot guns.

Bozeman and Big Sky are relatively small compared to the rest of the state. Just gotta get 30-40 miles outta town and it’s a different ball game.

I just want to know about the skiing. I already know the rest of this stuff. I’m well aware of population and home prices and cultural differences.

Heh. There's like 2.5 million less people than the metro area - 4.5 million less if you want to include the whole Front Range.

I've skied Bridger and Big Sky a few times. The skiing BLOWS compared to the Front Range.

You've got it all figured out, then.

The skiing is different from those places in some ways and not different in other ways.

Blackalps, all these crusty mags are actually pretty cool, but they’re definitely giving you some shit!

I feel like skiing here is amazing, but it’s not as straightforward as one might think.

Get a Bridger pass, and the world will slowly make sense (fingers crossed they open).

It’s TGR. I would be surprised if most of the comments weren’t snide and condescending. I have a couple potential jobs, including at Big Sky and YC and one in town. Been to Montana plenty, lived in GTNP for about a year. Just haven’t skied out there and wondering what kind of terrain and snow the Bozeman area has.

If you're coming from the Front Range a Big Sky pass might be an easier transition. Bridger is definitely a little different from most CO resorts and Big Sky has more of a Colorado feel. Otherwise snow and gravity work the same as Colorado up here.
