Some of the fluffiest April pow I've skied in memory up at BB this morning. Felt like mid winter snow and was bottomless if you chose your lines wisely.

Was told this afternoon the Really Big will roll out a pass that is for locals at a much better price point.
Only took a Pandemic and major threat to their solvency to recognize, "hey locals spend money too".
Believe it when I see it.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

I actually emailed the mountain manager a few days ago about offering a non-Ikon gold pass (when I saw JH's offering) and he replied that they were planning to. Also, he said they would offer "loyalty pricing" for those who had passes last year. Then yesterday they sent out a promo email announcing the same, promising details to come. So we'll see what they come up with.

04-24-2020, 05:51 PM #10766Understandably, there have been many questions about our plans for the 2020-21 ski season. To help answer some of those questions, we wanted to share an update on how we are moving forward with winter ski passes.
As a token of gratitude to the Big Sky community, we will be providing Loyalty Pricing for returning passholders who wish to purchase a 20-21 season pass.
Additionally, we are adding a new pass to our 20-21 lineup that will provide another option for unlimited access to the Tram.
We also want to give our passholders plenty of time to make the decision that is right for them. The savings deadline for season passes has been extended to June 15, 2020.
While we intend on operating for the 20-21 winter season, we understand that our guests might feel uncertain about purchasing a season pass. Therefore, we are working on a season pass assurance program to offer flexibility with your pass purchase, including a rollover to the 2021-22 winter season if a season-long interruption were to occur this winter.
We will share more details about Loyalty Pricing, the new pass option, and assurance program come May. Rest assured, if you have already purchased a 20-21 season pass, you will have the opportunity to make adjustments once our new lineup is available.
We thank you for being a loyal Big Sky passholder, and are looking forward to brighter days ahead, spent on the mountain together.

So, gold pass without ikon vs. a mid week pass with tram (last years bronze).. Let me guess which they toss out to the unwashed locals.

Would a "season long interruption" pretty much destroy Boyne and set the stage for VR to continue buying up everyone at "bargain basement" pricing in season or two? Every ski company will get destroyed. Those who can hang on and weather the storm will be the winners in a few years.
I assume the issue they are trying to figure out now is how they bring in workers from outside the country like during a normal ski season without a vaccine on the near horizon.
Shit is getting real-er.
PS. Anyone know of a live/work type deal for rent that isn't $2000. I'll drive out to three forks if I need to.

VR might have trouble servicing their debt before Boyne.
-
04-25-2020, 04:24 PM #10773
Boyne, VR and Cross Harbors with many others will be crushed by a season long interruption. Big debt and no cash flow is crippling for any business. The money behind the big projects underway at BS like the Montage and Montana Club have to be sweating heavily. So go the boom and bust cycles of the intermountain west.
As for cheap rent if Bullock does open up business, some strategic marketing of yourself to the cougars from the Yellowstone Club, Spanish Peaks or Moonlight may get you zero $ rent.

I was chatting with another guy about this today.
If the ski areas (and I mean all ski resorts in the US that rely on a paid operations staff) miss next year, what happens with their Patrol/Lift/grooming staff? Maybe some of those folks can afford to miss a season but for most it is a thin margin and they will have to go and do something else. Then if there is a 21/22 season how many will return?
A ski operation is a lot like a sports team, lots of seasonal workers that you rely on to make shit happen. It takes time to develop that base of operational knowledge. Disrupt it and it will be difficult to put it back together on short notice.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.
