    2003?

I recorded the snow phone messages those two days. Need to put them in a blank video or something so I can share. Thought I had some pics from skiing but can't find them atm.

Yup. I'm glad it "never snows here". Depth isn't everything (that's what she said). I've had amazing deep light turns in LCC, all over CO, etc. Best turns I have ever had were 20 minutes from where I sit right now.

You can get accurate-ish seasonal snow totals from snotel data. If you pull up the 30 day daily table, it gives you start of day accumulation values. You can then adjust the time period to be the water year (or whatever you want to look at, but water year works well for seasonal snow totals). You can then output that as an excel file. With a little bit of excel work, you can add up the difference in all of those daily accumulation values, which gives you a season total.

Obviously that has whatever inaccuracies you'll get from the snotel equipment. But it at least doesn't include any inaccuracies from a marketing department.

Edit: I just ran the numbers of the loan peak snotel. It shows 172 inches for the 21/22 season. That's October 1 through today.

Who cares what the seasonal total is, if that is the most important thing for you then look at the PNW or Tahoe. Montana is a dry state and the snow is terrible.

You're telling people on a ski forum that they shouldn't care how much it snows? I think you might be on the wrong forum.

Wasn't the storm total something like 120ish? Hands down deepest day I've ever had. Skied better a few days after it stopped snowing but I remember going over a roll over and being completely submerged(I'm 6'3) and not just the powder bubble. Kinda scary timing your breathes, true snorkel conditions. Great day but not without tradegy. RIP.

Yeah this would have been 2014 or 2015. Only about 24" new in the base but the bottom of Bridger lift to the top of the Ridge was stupid deep. At times the ski cutting was unnerving and I was glad I was carrying a radio. Almost no avalanche hazard other than tipping over head downhill.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

I examined SNOTEL trends for a project a couple years ago. Hard to add up seasonal snowfall so I took snapshots of April, May, and June SWE values on the first of each month. Short story is general uptick in average SWE since the 1980s. For SNOTELs that have data going back to the 1970s it's an overall downtrend because the 70s were very cold and wet and the 80s were not.

My attempt at Ted's first photo 4 springs ago was foiled by warm overnight temps and that HUGE cornice. In 2018 it was quite a bit bigger than that. Aka stupid big. Very shortly after the sunshine hit the face the rumbling began. Lotta wet slides. We stayed far away and watched for a while hoping to see the big guy come down. That would be a sight.

Lots of good stuff Ted!! I always assumed the 80's were epic. Ha. You can also see the big spike in your graphs from Spring 2011 - that was the best post season ever. We still had 100 inches at Memorial Day. Then I went down the rabbit hole about the Bridgers and cloud seeding.

Apparently the winters of 84-85 and 85-86 were terrible and they struggled to open and have snow for Christmas. If you google "Super and Heimbach 86-87 Bridger Cloud Seeding" you can find the PDF of what they did. Bridger asked MSU to seed the clouds for 86-87 so they could insure good snow for the holidays. The cloud seeding was done with great success from 68-72, but the 86-87 winter was also pretty poor and it seems like there wasn't much to seed in the way of storms. The storms that did come had erratic winds that weren't favorable for seeding. Most of the now came in October/November and then it didn't snow again for months. Jeez - these weather patterns sound familiar!!

Then I found a report to the MT Legislature that was pretty recent. HJ40 Seeding Clouds. The laws in Idaho are pretty liberal. Literally anyone can seed clouds as long as they file a log of their activities with the Dept. of Agriculture. Sun Valley seems like they should do more of this!! Colorado runs 8 different programs to benefit ski hills and irrigators. I guess I didn't realize this was still a thing. Some regional power companies also have some pretty big projects to help improve water flows.

These are from a few weeks ago, to add to the fun. Oddly enough, drone assisted footage makes it feel like your not quite doing it solo

I fished the bottom end of Armstrong just before runoff. Nymphing was good with typical spring creek shit.

I don't pay to fish the others.

Spent a rainy weekend exploring the Big Snowy range. Pretty easy access and cool 2,000-2,500 ft vert. Hope to get up there next spring. Non motorized access is pretty easy.

Nice, Trackhead. I’ve looked at access up there. Interesting amphitheater looking terrain.

Also, reports of upwards of 2 feet of snow forecast in the tobacco roots, big sky area and beartooths…

If that forecast pans out we will be in much better shape for the summer (I hope). Alpine station is showing 1.55-ish " of H2o in the last couple of days
