I mean, can you blame them? Some random person signing up to patrol and asking to run control routes? Do you not expect to have to cut your teeth for a couple of seasons on Andesite to show you are capable of the more dangerous (fun?) work? I don't doubt you are a strong skier and know your shit, but some random person at Big Sky doesn't know that. And with the influx of egotistical kooks in the area, I'm sure they're very skeptical of anyone who calls up and asks to run routes or throw bombs. My short stint as a volly in Colorado taught me that you need show you are capable by working the mundane shit first, before they throw you into the fun stuff.

My wife was on the volly patrol at Big Sky for five or six years. Bunion describes the bulk of the stuff she did but would add volly is not in the high alpine or in avalanch control as that was pro patrol only. Typically you get "interviewed" while sitting in the larger shacks between calls and routes. The leaders quickly figured out my wife had superior EMT skills (highest score ever on the EMT exam the year she tested) and having worked in psychiatric hospitals for years knew about drug interactions and keeping patients calm while collecting information for reports. As a result she was often the one tapped for difficult accidents and making next of kin calls. SHe also was involved in testing avalanche dogs from other resorts, finding lost children, guiding people who thought a BS expert slope was the same as Buck Hill and sometimes counselling fighting spouses.
I was told by a patrol leader 2 years ago BS was plannng to increase the number of safety patrollers (speed control), reduce the number of volly patrollers and increase the size of the pro patrol. The vote to get CBU representation for the pro patrol may change the plans and what the volly patrol can do.

She must love her work if she was doing all of that for free - some of that's heavy stuff.
Surely BS charges extra for on-hill marriage counseling?People here are typically assholes (it's part of the charm) - dan_pdx

I'm a volunteer at another hill in MT and it's a stupid amount of hours to work for free. It's about 25-30 hours a month during ski season and summer has a bunch of training as well. If I wasn't in too deep I would bail. The last thing I want to do after working a 10 hour day is drive to the hill and do 4 more hours of training every week.
I thought the medical and mountain ops/avy training would be good but it's mostly just dealing with children and old folks who got hurt. I am lucky that I get to take part in it as how competitive it is elsewhere in the country but damn.....

Hey Total, I agree with you about the average bear signing up, and that’s where I’m checking out.
I’ve worked a bunch of backcountry skiing guide gigs, have a pro avalanche cert from Canada eh, and am a wilderness EMT.
If y’all need me, I’ll be taking folks up to a couple yurts in the greater big sky area this winter.
Oh yeah, and skiing for fun on my off days!

There was a sea story meant in good fun about a big tall dude on the BS Safety/Speed Patrol with Packer logos on each side of his helmet taking weed from those enjoying a safety meeting in the better known shacks. A few people got their long johns in a bunch about a weed shake down hoodlum on the hill and I apologized for causing the TGR rumpus with some creative writing. The genie doesn't go back in the bottle easily.

SUPERIOR - to borrow a phrase, 'I feel your pain. ' and was going to call out total- for his response...
I agree with Bunion(?), that expressing an ' interest in snow science' does mean you were asking to do control work.
what I can offer is, If you put your name on a volunteer candidate list, you are absolutely starting at the bottom - and
you will go through a screening process designed to select only the Very dedicated
( with your credentials, you have other approaches. )
I appreciate the situation you appear to be in and I wish you good luck in your Guide work, and joy in your freeskiing ! !
respectfully. skiJ

Hey, tubing can be more dangerous than skiing!

BS gold passes go off sale Sept. 7, and other pass prices go up again, if anybody cares.

I prefer February but it looks like we may be out there around Christmas this year. Is swifty guaranteed to be up and running by then? I can't imagine not but last time I checked they hadn't even built the base up yet.

Yeah, hopefully they have all the parts they need. Maybe except for that one crucial bolt stuck in a shipping container somewhere. Hot laps on ramcharger for all!

Have a client who lives in Bozeman that was just promoted. He skis a a lot and does outdoors stuff. Our company wants to send him a gift. What's the best ski/outdoor shop in town?

^^^ There really isn't one now if you can believe that.
Closest would be Chalet Sports on Main st. There is an REI if you think he would be into that.I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.
