Right on. Do you sometimes say the lines while you’re watching? I do that with It’s A Wonderful Life. “Here’s your hat, what’s your hurry?” “This old thing?”

That is a strong point for White Christmas. And even though I'm a Christmas Story fan myself, I checked in on ole George Bailey and noticed a few items of significance there, too: George's newel post needed fixing first, and his friends Bert and Ernie gave PBS the only daily commentator duo to outlast MacNeil and Lehrer.

And sure, they're seldom on a Christmas-theme, but Dana Carvey's Jimmy Stewart impressions are easily as solid an addition to the comedic cannon as that super prudent President or the Church Lady. And having attempted the Superior Dance myself at least 3 times, I do not say that lightly.

Around here movies 1-4 include Ralphie, George Bailey, Clark W. Grizzmnnnnd, Bing Crosby and Danny Fucking Kaye in some order. But #5 is tough:

Die Hard, Elf, Bad Santa, Four Christmases, Simon Birch, A Midnight Clear, Scrooged--can they beat Boris Karlof's Mr. Grinch with the Thurl Ravenscroft soundtrack? I think not, but it's close. Then again, I haven't seen Family Man in a minute. Must revisit.

    I love Christmas time

Excellent point on the Grinch. And I’m not a Christmas Story fan but props where props are due. Even if it’s not your cup of tea you have to recognize it’s place in the canon.

So that makes the top 5:

    1. Tie.
    White Christmas
    Wonderful Life

To round out the top 5 in no particular order
    Christmas Story
    The Grinch
    Christmas Vacation

Anyone want to submit an substantive argument to alter that top 5?

Reason 586 why I love It's A Wonderful Life: I used to live in Pottersville. Who can argue with White Christmas. The animated Grinch is 1000X better than the movie. As previously stated Pocket Full Of Miracles is top 5. So is The Family Stone (if just for Rachel McAdams). Rounding out my top 5 is Miracle On 34th Street. Honorable mention to Love Actually.

Started the season off right with Christmas Vacation followed by my daughter’s first ever viewing of Die Hard. She started out Luke warm but pretty quickly got into it.

As a kid, my only question after watching Die Hard was “when can I see it again?!” She’s clearly more advanced than I was, asking things like, why didn’t he keep checking for shoes, and why don’t they ever run out of bullets? She also noticed that the ambulance wasn’t in the truck at the beginning, something I’ve never noticed.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Ok to be clear (and it should not have to be said) we are talking the animated Grinch. The movie thing that’s more recent is an abomination against all that is natural. So does that animation not qualify as a movie? Fair point. I’ll accept that ruling.

So now we are down to
    Wonderful Life
    White Christmas

And then we have nominations for

    Miracle on 34th
    Christmas Vacation
    Christmas Story
    Family Man
    Pocketful or Miracles.

Need to get down to 3.

Xmas started today for me, with the traditional heading to the plateau and searching for our tannenbaum with my daughter and the hound. Beautiful sunny day, only about 20cm of snow with a crust hard enough to support 70lbs. Only a grouse got ruffled by our intrusion. Climbed an old unploughed road about 1.5km, I chose what seemed a likely tree, then another route down via a little lake for a quick slide on the ice which both Emily and Lexa took great pleasure in. Daughter wasn't overly impressed with my first tannenbaum choice, so after loading the first in the truck, we walked up the main road and found one that met her expectations a couple hundred metres from the truck. Albeit much dustier. Gave it a hose off at home, send out a post to friends for the second tree, and made Mum very happy with our offering, just before she settle down for a rest before the night shift.
    Joyous Yule to you all!

The trees on cars coming down from the mountains today were the most pitiful Charlie Browners I've ever seen in my 20+ years making that first ski day trip. We got a decent one from our favorite town charity lot last weekend, but man.. slim pickens out this way..

In university, we sold xmas trees each season to contribute to the graduating class's banquet. Probably the best retail 'job' I've ever participated. Most everyone is happy, copious amounts of rum and hot chocolate was consumed (which affect was most notable coming out of an Edmonton -20C into a very warm travel trailer to make change); even a shipment of trees that arrived in a hog stock truck - every tree that touched the sides of that truck, once warmed in someones house, reeked of swine to the heavens - did not dampen people's spirit while tree shopping.
We had a section that we placed all the most damaged or misshapen trees, and put up a sign saying Charlie's pick, with some minor charge. We had no issue selling those trees, and those customers seemed by and large the most stoked to take those poor little trees home.

I seriously look at a xmas tree permit in our local community forest when I retire, if I make it that far. Can't image a better way to enjoy the community, in a mildly commercial sense, during the lead-up to the solstice.

Outstanding Schindler! One of my favorite traditions is all the cookies my mom bakes for Christmas, and now my sisters have taken over the reins.

Kolaches, 7-layers, wreath cookies, gingerbread, give them all to me.

Great work. You didn’t miss anything at the Alta, snow was shite. Did 5 runs and headed back to the valley for a hike. Those butter cookies remind me of my grandma, thanks for bringing those memories back
