Mid-range forecast model data looking promising:

Hopefully the imminent splash over the weekend doesn't blow everything out below 4k

When do you guys think opening day will be at the Summit? For the 2016/2017 season they didn't open up till Dec. 6th, which surprised me with how good of a year they had. I know that doesn't many anything when it comes to when they can open and that they basically only rely on natural snowfall, but I would have expected it to be late Nov which worries me about this season. I don't know if last year they didn't have enough high accumulation days in Nov that prevented the opening, or if there was other factors like the fact that being at such a low elevation rain could have destroyed the bases enough times to prevent an early opening. Either way I'm disappointed to see that Crystal is potentially opening tomorrow and Stevens is opening on the 17th, and it seems like them opening up around thanksgiving is a hoopdream. There is a good start of a base for even summit West, so hopefully there wont be any significant rain the next two days.

Takes a lot of snow to open Alpy because its mostly all steep, really rocky terrain with lots of underbrush. In my 4 winters up here, crystal opens first, then stevens, then Central/West, then Alpy, then East. Its a bummer that the snoqualmie pass no longer includes half price tickets to crystal for my early season usage. Also, operations at Alpental are a little more... laid back... than the other ski areas around, so bragging about opening dates isnt so much a point of pride.

It’ll open when Gib says so. Keep an eye on TAY for his announcement that uphill traffic is verboten. #bigholes

It's typically a three-legged race between Baker, Crystal & Stevens to open first. Crystal will often open just Green Valley w/ mandatory upload & download via the gondi, no grooming whatsoever and a generally subpar experience. When Baker opens it's usually "on" - but I've ridden everything from 20" to 75" on opening day at the Great White Northern Dead-End, it varies based on storm patterns and when they can get out to prep the hill. Stevens will often open with limited terrain once they have an 18-24" base at pass level. Some years that means Daisy & the rope tow, others it means Brooks, too. Rarely do they have Skyline, Hogsback or Tye Mill open until a week or two into the season.

The Summit always leads w/ West as they can open Pacific Crest with as little as 18". Last season opening day operations included Wildside which was a nice bonus. Central usual follows West as they only need about 24" to get it going. Alpental requires at least 30" at the bottom and twice that up top. Historically, opening-day for West is in early Dec. with Central following a week or so after and Alpental by Christmas. East doesn't crack until the holidays and then only operates on weekends & holidays until late March. Amazingly enough, they typically shut-down West before anything else despite it having the most base on the south side of I-90.

Just saw this on the summits twitter,

There's not enough snow to open this weekend, but keep up those snow dances! If mother nature comes through for next weekend, we'll be ready! https://twitter.com/SummitSnow411/st...80077323153408
Looks like they could open west the weekend of the 17th.

I may go up to west this sunday to see if I can safely do a few laps

Sucks about east being open limited. It is my favorite of the 3 summit areas.

I haven't missed an opening day at Alpental since I moved up here in 2000.
Alpy opening days for the last 12 seasons (I can dig back further)

    05/06 - 12/01
    06/07 - 12/02
    07/08 - 12/19
    08/09 - 12/26
    09/10 - 11/28
    10/11 - 12/03
    11/12 - 12/02
    12/13 - 12/15
    13/14 - 01/12
    14/15 - 01/17
    15/16 - 12/18
    16/17 - 12/10

It's worth noting that some of the openings were epic powder days, others were "soft openings" with limited access to terrain and less than ideal conditions.

    Also, this:

FWIW - There are big holes, but the real reason to GTFO is that the patrol is working to get the area set up and to perform avalanche control work. Attempting to tour within area boundaries at that time creates a large logistical problem. Basically, this means that all control work has to come to a halt (until said skier is escorted off the mountain by people who have better things to do), which ends up delaying opening for everyone else that has paid for their tickets and is waiting in line at the base. Don't be "that guy".
So, once the area says it's in operation, go somewhere else to earn your turns.

A number of people were lapping West on Sunday when I went by. ~12" at the base and 16-20" at the top. Unless the forecast takes a massive turn... they'll be able to go by next weekend.

Alpental is pretty unkind with less than 50" of base.
